2nd District Congressional Race

It may be one of the coldest winters on record, but things may be about to heat up in Georgia’s Second Congressional District. At least three, possibly four, candidates are running on the Republican side to challenge Congressman Sanford Bishop.

Mike Keown entered the race early. He currently serves as a State Representative and a pastor for the Coolidge Baptist Church. Keown has some political experience, but he is running as the common man citing that he loves to fish, hunt, ride motorcycles and dirt track cars, and has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Mike Keown says on his web site that he has earned a Doctorate, but he is not the only candidate to earn a PhD. Rudy Adams received a PhD too. Adams has a youtube campaign advertisement Judging from his web site, Adams does not appear to have ever held a political office. He is running as an average citizen. He mentions that he is a member of several civic organizations, but he is not specific as to which ones. He has flown in an aerial application business for farmers, is a Master Farrier, has worked in law enforcement, and is a Vietnam Veteran.

Don’t Jump George Bailey, The Estate Tax Might Come Back!

These days it seems that Washington has its greedy hands in everybody’s pockets to pay for all of the entitlement programs and stimulus packages. Free health care, ain’t exactly free you know. So, it is surprising to see that the estate tax, also called the death tax, has not been reinstated—yet. You may recall that the Bush administration set out to repeal the death tax. After the threat of a filibuster, Republicans in 2001 opted to phase out the tax through 2010 with the idea that they would totally repeal it at a later date when the political climate was more favorable. That never happened. With no further action from Congress, the tax will resurface in 2011. If you are Jimmy Stewart playing George Bailey in the movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, you may be thinking this could be the year to jump off of the bridge. Not so fast though.

Looks Like We WILL Have a GOP Primary in CD-2

Weds night, we received an email through the Contact Us page asking if we had heard anything about a new challenger to Sanford Bishop. Bill replied that he had. Apparently, the guy had issued a press release in Thomasville earlier this month, where he is popular with the local Tea Party crowd.

I did some research on the name Bill gave, and I found this article from the Thomasville Times-Enterprise from nearly three weeks ago – and almost NOTHING else. As in this profile page from his current employer is literally the only thing that I’ve found so far other than the Times-Enterprise article.

We can trust Bishop on Ag issues, right?

Representative Sanford Bishop has made his career on being “good” on farm issues. Now, typically that means for many that he’s been bringing home ag pork and leaving out the regulations that farmers typically chafe at. But now, there’s HR 875, the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009.

An innocuous name, but that’s just a smoke screen. Continue reading We can trust Bishop on Ag issues, right?

WWJD?

In this era of Christian guilt, it seems that many in the entertainment and political arena are claiming that socialistic policies are congruent with the policies of Jesus Christ. These claims cannot go unchallenged.

On occasion, I will listen to the John Boy and Billy Show during my morning routine. I often switch to another station when self proclaimed, “Curmudgeon at Large” Robert D. Raiford spouts off liberal politics. During one of his lectures he actually said that Jesus would have been a socialist. I wrote a retort, but I never heard it read on the radio. (Note to self: I need to stop changing the channel when he talks!)

President Obama misquoted the Bible a few months back when he said, “We are our brother’s keeper.” Last week during Representative Sanford Bishop’s “victory tour,” he said that before he cast his vote for government run health care, he asked himself, “What would Jesus Do?” That is an interesting question indeed.

The Final Nail?

Since January it has been obvious that President Obama has been building something. The question was always what? From the Executive Orders on his first day to the installment of radical “Czars” to his desire to set up a Civilian National Security Force that is “just as well funded as our military.” What has President Obama been building?

Five days prior to the inauguration, the President said, “We are just five days away from fundamentally transforming America.” What has he been building?

Well, after Sunday’s vote on the healthcare bill, it has become obvious. The President and the ones that voted on this bill have been building a coffin. They are in preparation for the murder of freedom and democracy in our Republic.

Georgia’s New Aisle Bird?

Neal Boortz, a talk radio show host out of Atlanta, used to refer to Cynthia McKinney as an aisle bird. She would make sure that she always had a seat by the aisle during a presidential address so she could get face time with the cameras and the president.
To get a seat by the aisle, you have to assume your perch early in the day. During one of the State of the Union speeches, Boortz said that a Congressman would have to arrive five to six hours early and STAY in the seat. A Congressman cannot send an intern to waste time waiting for the cameras.
You can then feel good if you watched the President’s healthcare address to the joint sessions of Congress Wednesday night if you are from the 2nd District. It seems that Georgia has a new aisle bird. Congressman Sanford Bishop got a lot of face time with President Obama where he “showed him the love.” Too bad that Bishop couldn’t have spent that wait time working for his district instead of sitting in a seat.

One less for Republican nomination in Georgia Second

SWGAPolitics.com recently received a letter sent out by Lee Ferrell, who had filed to run in the Republican primary for the second district seat currently held by Sanford Bishop. Ferrell, who ran against Bishop in the previous race, had been staunch in his stance that he would run against the Democrat.

Tuesday, September 1, 2009, two opposing groups met face to face outside of Congressman Sanford Bishop’s office. One group appeared to be well funded. They carried premade signs and were fairly dressed well. The other group brought homemade signs and showed up, for the most part, in t shirts and ball caps. The groups drew about the same amount of people, but the difference was stark.

Ken King, a regional field director for Organizing For America-a group connected to President Obama, held up thousands of signatures that he said were gathered from people around the district. Most of the ones who attended their rally carried signs that read, “Thank You” and “Standing Together For Health Insurance Reform.” A podium was set up where people could talk about their recent experiences with the health care system. One such person was quoted as saying, “One group of people who enjoy the benefit of adequate healthcare have the audacity to deny millions of people the right to have it when America can afford to provide it.” Perhaps he has not checked the US Debt Clock. It even appeared that Organizing For America had hired “Video It” to professionally document their well orchestrated rally.

Why Protest Reform That Would Benefit Us: A Letter To Congressman Bishop

In a recent article than ran in the Albany Herald about the protest at Congressman Sanford Bishop’s office against healthcare reform, Congressman Bishop said, “We have the First Amendment in this country, but I find it curious that people choose to protest healthcare reform that would benefit them.” Congressman, you find it curious because at your town hall meeting in Albany you chose to talk to your constituents rather than listen. I know that your staff in the Albany office has become a fan of SWGAPolitics. I hope you are reading this too. I’ll try once more to explain why America, and more importantly—your constituents, do not want this reform.

There is an old saying that goes… “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I am not implying that the healthcare system in this country could not use a little tweaking, but it is not to the point where we should scrap the entire system and rebuild it. Have you seen the polls that show numbers around 75% of Americans that are happy with their insurance plan? Tweaking the system with free market solutions that involve patient/doctor relationships rather than government officials is where we should look. Let’s explore health savings accounts, tax breaks for healthy lifestyle choices, and a system that is accountable to the patient. Why does the plan not address tort reform? A constituent mentioned that out of 47 million uninsured, only 15 million are chronically uninsured. They can be covered by the savings that will occur through a free market approach. Please sir, I am begging you to listen!
