I don’t know how long this from the Georgia Education Alliance has been up, but it was just brought to my attention yesterday:

Georgia Education Alliance strongly urges its members to not support Ray McBerry in his campaign to be Georgia’s next
governor. Allegations of McBerry’s past actions tarnish the honor and trust that Georgians place with teachers. Insight from
the victim, alludes to McBerry abusing the moral standards associated with the teaching profession for his own selfish,
amoral gains.

In 2003, McBerry was accused of using this position as a Youth Minister and teacher to have a relationship with a student.

According to a recent AJC article: “McBerry urged her to cut ties with her high school sweetheart. And McBerry then began
the process of replacing him, Rachel Gandee said. He gave her a cellphone that allowed the two to talk without parental
tracking. The loan of the phone is beyond dispute – McBerry admits to it.

Once school started, she spent the hours between the afternoon bell and evening band practices with McBerry. She said the
future candidate for governor would leave his job at Patrick Henry High and drive 10 miles to pick her up at Henry County
High School, where she was now a junior.

McBerry and his wife separated, then divorced.”

Read full text: http://blogs.ajc.com/political-insider-jim-galloway/2010/04/29/parents-church-and-judge-told-future-gop-
candidate-for-governor-leave-the-girl-alone/

In no form does McBerry represent the thousands of Georgia teachers, or the actions that are expected from fellow teachers
and Georgians alike.

GEA urges fellow candidates and education advocacy groups to call on Ray McBerry to end his bid for Governor. He is a
disgrace to the teaching profession and to the potential office of Governor.

When doing a basic Google search to see if either the Georgia Association of Educators or the Professional Association of Georgia Educators had written anything on the subject, nothing from them came up. However, this piece from the publisher of the Augusta Chronicle did show up, and since this was the first time I had seen it, I thought I would pass it along.

Wonder if GAE or PAGE will follow suit?

Last week, Ray McBerry sent out a campaign email saying he was “vindicated”.

The problem is, that email alone was full of lies, and so was the affidavit.

Specifically:

Greg Burgess has contacted me and SWGAPolitics.com directly and confirms that he did NOT write this affidavit. (Note the crossed out name.)

There are multiple problems with the content of the statement:

1) In section 2, Greg/Roger claims that he is the supervisor of Chris Gandee. In fact, he is NOT, and Chris’s supervisor is writing his own affidavit to that effect. So we’ve already gotten one outright lie on this thing, and we’re barely four lines into it! In other words if Roger/Greg DID swear under oath that everything in this affidavit was true, as he claims in 3) he is willing to do, he would be committing PERJURY.

2) The problem with people saying they haven’t contributed to Ray McBerry (as Greg/Roger does in 4) ) is that many of his contributions apparently are not tracked – but we’ll be looking at that more within the next couple of days.

3) His fifth statement is actually accurate – the first time in this entire affidavit he has given a completely accurate and verifiable statement. And who can blame Rachel for not wanting a man she sees as a sexual predator to be Governor? Would ANY victim of such trauma ever want to place another innocent in the path of the man she sees as her abuser? It would be like a person knowing in 1928 just how evil Adolf Hitler was and saying “I will work to see that he never becomes Chancellor of Germany.” Would such a person have been incorrect or unjustified?

4) Notice in 6) that he specifically cites the AJC’s article where Jim Galloway interviewed Rachel. There is a reason for this. You see, Chris wasn’t making these claims independently. He was reading some online comments out loud when Greg/Roger apparently overheard him. THAT is the reason Chris “did not make it clear” where he expected the money to come from – he never expected any!

5) Regarding 7), neither Chris and Rachel’s marriage status nor her sexuality have ANY bearing on any of this. They are trying to throw out a red herring to distract “Christians” who LOATHE gays into somehow thinking that Ray’s relationship with Rachel was appropriate because she was an “evil” bisexual and somehow deserved it. Sadly, some of his supporters will take that bait and believe exactly that for exactly that reason – though hopefully they will be smart enough to not admit it publicly. Talk to any person who has worked with rape victims where the rapist was the same sex, and they can tell you horror story after horror story there. Of course, counselors who specialize in sexual trauma in general can also tell you the well known fact that sexual trauma victims tend to have very diverse experiences after such trauma. Note that I am NOT accusing Ray himself of any of this, and the preceding paragraph should not be construed to that effect in any way.

6) On 8), could it be possible that Roger/Greg is upset with Chris for some perceived slight at work and is simply trying to get back at Chris in any way he possibly can?

And a quick note on the email Ray sent out about this: He lied AGAIN. He claims that three individuals across the State are “subjects of libel suits”. Yes, I got one of those letters. Tom did too, and the other person who got one was Linda Pittman, who is currently undergoing chemo treatment. I haven’t read Tom or Linda’s letter, but my letter did NOT say I was the subject of an actual lawsuit. It was a “shut up or else” letter denying my First Amendment rights to speak freely and threatening a lawsuit if I did not immediately take down EVERY reference I’ve ever made to Ray – even those he does not deny – AND never speak of him again in any way.

Obviously, that aint happening.

I said a couple of weeks ago that I was tired of writing about Ray, and that I intended to stop unless major things shook loose – and I sincerely mean that.

Ray continues to claim that his teaching license is still valid. I’ve already shown that this is at best misleading, since his certificate expired nearly 5 years ago – and at worst an outright lie, for the same reason.

But maybe Ray shouldn’t keep mentioning that…

You see, I was just told a very interesting RUMOR which SWGAPolitics.com will be confirming tomorrow. My source on this is extremely trustworthy and has never steered me wrong on any other tip, so I give quite a bit of credence when this source speaks, but it is possible that what I am about to say is wrong. Like I said, we will be confirming this tomorrow and posting the appropriate update.

The RUMOR?

Henry County Board of Education is seeking to re-open McBerry’s case on the grounds that he lied to them in 2003/2004. This time, they’re going for the jugular – they want his license completely revoked, once and for all.

Given everything that I’ve heard as a result of my work on this story, if HALF the claims I’ve heard are true – Rachel Gandee’s is the only one I’ve personally seen the conclusive documentation on – Ray McBerry isn’t fit to be around children PERIOD, much less as a potential teacher.

We already know Ray currently lies about his teaching license. Unlike his claims, even though his license is simply “expired” currently, he could NOT, per PSC rules, simply “renew anytime that [he] choose[s]” – unless he has met some fairly strict requirements that most outside of classroom teachers would never bother with.

If he has, in fact, completed said requirements, why hasn’t he applied to have his license reinstated already?

No, Ray has a history of lying about his teaching license and his activities with students while he was a teacher – and apparently, his lies are catching up to him.

Since you have heretofore not contacted my Campaign to let us know that you are extending an invitation to my Campaign to participate, as you are required to do per the Georgia YR constitution cited below, I am sending this email to you to instruct you what you are to do to remedy this problem immediately.

As if we haven’t had enough fun with Ray McBerry for the campaign season, he calls a press conference today and releases a press release that is just more of Ray’s rambling style of whatever you want to call it. He claims his innocence, and all the usual jazz, and you can read it for yourself on Peach Pundit.

In it, McBerry claims he will be filing a lawsuit against three people to be named later. I’m guessing that Jeff will be one of them, and Rachel Gandee another. Whether yours truly is the third or not is a matter for debate (it may also be Jim Galloway from the Atlanta Journal). Ray also says that anyone repeating the charges will get a big, fat lawsuit leveled at them as well. Hmmm.

You see, it’s only libel if it’s false, you know it, and report it anyways with an intent to cause harm. Frankly, he doesn’t have a case against Jeff Sexton, Jim Galloway, or Tom Knighton and I think he knows it. That’s why the suits won’t be filed until after November supposedly. However, there’s something else intrinsically disturbing here. Here’s the exact quote:

I will be aggressively prosecuting anyone who continues this libel, or reprints that of others, whether they be blogger, media, or political opponent.

Now, let’s keep in mind that it’s only libel if you believe it false. Now, let’s also keep in mind that Ray is supposedly a big fan of the Constitution. I guess he missed that whole “freedom of speech” issue?

For the record, both Jeff and I completely believe Rachel Gandee’s report of what happened. We believe her mother’s as well. McBerry can try and file a lawsuit. Frankly, I doubt it’ll materialize. This is nothing more than a way to deflect the situation until after the election, because he believes he’ll win. Afterwards, who will care about a few bloggers?

Personally, I don’t see how he could think he’d win a lawsuit. The facts are that he was found on a dirt road at night with a teenage girl who he had been told to stay away from, and that he put up a sign offering free puppies of a breed that Rachel Gandee had said she wanted in an effort to get her to initiate contact with him. Frankly, the creepy scale on just the stuff he admits to is high enough to warrant my decision to consider him unfit to rule an ant colony, much less govern the state of Georgia.

But you know what Ray? We know the only reason you’re doing this is because you think that this will be sufficient to diffuse discussion about this inappropriate relationship. Plenty of commenters on various blogs have argued that if it’s false, he should sue for libel but if it’s not, he should withdraw. He doesn’t want to withdraw, because he’s crazy enough to think people believe him. But I suspect he doesn’t want to file a suit because he knows the allegations to be true and he would lose, which would hurt his chances with the hard-core, Christian Republicans that he seeks to court.

But that’s fine Ray. You make your little threats, and we’ll do what we do. Ain’t America great?

As if Ray McBerry couldn’t go off his rocker any more, there’s this quote that Jim Galloway of the Atlanta Journal shares this tidbit from our favorite candidate this past weekend:

“In the last month, I’ve found out why good people rarely get involved in politics anymore. I’ve had more lies said about me in the last month than I’ve had in my entire life of 42 years.

“And I’m here to tell you today that the liberal media, including our esteemed moderator today, can say whatever he wants to say about this businessman and daddy that’s running for governor here in Georgia. But I’m running because I have the same principles as our founding fathers.

“And I wear it as a badge of honor to be the strongest conservative in this race, and that’s why the liberal media wants us out of this race. It ain’t gonna happen.”

emphasis all mine

Karen Handel’s response is on the AJC site as well.

McBerry is also quoted there as saying:

“It’s absolutely being brought up for political retaliation. But I can tell you as a conservative, as a Christian, and as a daddy, I’m not getting out of this race.”

Well, since SWGAPolitics.com is the site that really stirred this whole mess up, I guess we’re the so-called “liberal” press?

Well, if you mean classical liberal, then I can go along with the term applying, but I seriously doubt that McBerry meant anything of the sort. Instead, he’s been trying to cover all this as a vicious attack designed to knock him out of winning the GOP primary, a primary he hasn’t got a hope in hell of actually winning in the first place.

McBerry is accused of some morally reprehensible things, things that he knew better than to do. Even by his own admissions, he had pathetically poor judgement involving the girl, and that barely touches on the accusations that it wasn’t nearly as innocent as McBerry alleges.

But remember folks, in a world where things don’t go like you want, just classify someone as a bugaboo and blame them for everything. After all, that’s what good old Ray McBerry does.

For the record Ray, we ain’t liberals here. We opposed things like Obamacare and Cap&Trade. We’re pro gun. We’re pro-free market and anti-collectivism. Sounds like rabid liberals to you, huh? So why don’t you do yourself a favor and drop out of the race before you say something even dumber? OK?

The following is from conservative activist Bryan Miller, via his Facebook page. In the comments on it, Maria Sheffield re-iterates what she had earlier said on twitter about not appearing where Ray McBerry is. Karen Handel made similar claims today at a forum hosted by Jim Galloway, while other candidates had a much weaker response.

Anyway, here’s Bryan’s post:

It has come to light in recent weeks that long shot GOP candidate for Governor Ray McBerry, a former teacher, carried on an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl while he was the girl’s youth pastor. While I will not go into specific details of the allegations, and what McBerry himself admits to, the information can be found here via the AJC: http://blogs.ajc.com/political-insider-jim-galloway/2010/04/29/parents-church-and-judge-told-future-gop-candidate-for-governor-leave-the-girl-alone/

Last week McBerry wrote a $4,180.18 check and qualified to be on the ballot this July as a republican. Party officials are barred by law from preventing his candidacy. Thus, the Georgia GOP should do everything it can to separate itself from all things Ray McBerry. State party officials should donate McBerry’s qualifying check to charity and make it clear there is no room in the GA GOP for candidates who have demonstrated such behavior.

It is up to local party officials and event organizers not to invite or allow McBerry to participate in any candidate forums, party meetings, events, and so on. Any invitation currently out there should be rescinded. It is frankly nauseating that we have people who will applaud and cast straw poll votes for such a disgraceful individual as Ray McBerry. Those voters should be ashamed.

While I have not, and have no plans to, endorse any gubernatorial candidate for governor until after the primary, I applaud Karen Handel for her stance on this issue. Handel has been the most critical of McBerry’s actions and has gone further to say she will no longer appear on stage at forums with him. If you recall, Handel was also the first, and only, GOP candidate for governor to call on former Speaker Glenn Richardson to resign amidst news he carried on an affair with a utility lobbyist while sponsoring legislation that would have benefited her employer.

Lastly, Ray McBerry has said he has no intention of getting out of this race. McBerry blames everyone but himself for this problem. He has continued to act in a way that only enhances his own ego. It is time for him to take responsibility for his actions. It is time for him to do what is best for his family and the people of this state. It is time for Ray McBerry to get out of this race and out of the public eye.

Ray McBerry, and is past escapades with teen aged girls, has so far just netted him some bad press. However that seems to be changing. To start with, Karen Handel, another candidate for governor going on record as not being a McBerry fan. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Jim Galloway reports that Mrs. Handel’s spokesman said:

“Karen is very uncomfortable appearing onstage with Mr. McBerry and is perplexed that GOP groups continue to invite him to events.

“He clearly does not represent the values of the Republican Party or of Georgians in general and Karen will take the lead in saying this — even if other Republican leaders do not.

“The fact that he continues to campaign as if none of these revelations has occurred is disturbing and unsettling.”

Let’s be fair though. Handel is running against McBerry, so it’s in her best interests to point out the flaws in other candidates. She wants to win after all. Unfortunately, that only goes so far because McBerry is behind Handel in every professional poll out there.

Maria Sheffield, a Republican candidate for Insurance Commissioner, doesn’t have any such motivations though. On her Facebook page, Sheffield posted the following:

I have declined to appear at The Moral Nation, The American Renovation Gathering. I will not appear with McBerry at event promoting morals.

And

I agree with John Watson someone in leadership @ state GOP should call on Ray McBerry to withdraw from Gov race.

Sure enough, John Watson did say that. Watson is a former finance chairman for the state GOP and a one time chief of state for Governor Purdue. He’s also the father of two girls. Again, courtesy of Jim Galloway:

“But we ought to stand up – and party leadership ought to stand up and say, ‘This guy has no business running as a Republican. We’re disgusted by him. We think he’s an outrage. We call on all local parties, if he’s been invited to a gubernatorial candidate forum, you ought to rescind that invitation.’

“We ought to say, ‘Withdraw from this race.’ Somebody in leadership at the party ought to be saying that.

“And we ought to be taking the $4,000 bucks that the party took [from McBerry for qualifying] and we ought to give it to the family and the child that was molested by this guy.

McBerry, who without this exposure would probably best be termed an “also ran”, is now at the forefront of a GOP firestorm as prominent party members seek to distance themselves from him and his antics. Now, the question becomes will he listen to the rest of the party and withdraw? Or will he keep pushing forward despite this scandal?

We will probably be able to tell soon enough.
