The question was posed: What do you think of Dr. Murfree’s contract? I wanted to let it stew for a bit before I said anything, but at least some people are curious. Not surprising, since I’ve made it pretty clear I wasn’t a fan of the whole process that resulted in his hiring. For those who don’t know, he’s being paid $140,000 to start with and that will bump up to $147,000 per year after he’s certified.

The Albany Herald ran a story in their Sunday edition regarding Dr. Joshua Murfree, the Dougherty School Board’s controversial pick for the Superintendent position. Now, I’ve been critical of Dr. Murfree’s qualifications from the start. He was ranked #34 out of 37 candidates, and has never taught grades K-12. Yes, we parents of Dougherty County have concerns. But when I read this crap, I about flew through the roof:
“Thank you. If it had not been for Martin, Malcolm, Medgar, Emmitt, Lucy Diggs-Slowe, W.E.B., Booker T., George Washington Carver, Sojourner Truth, Jesse, The Little Rock Nine, Wilson and Murfree would really be catching hell. It is our time … If not us then the future of our children is [NOT]!!!

WALB is reporting that the Dougherty County School Board has voted to hire Dr. Joshua Murfree in a 4-3 vote. I leave it to you to figure out who voted which way.

When it comes to the Dougherty Count School Board Fab Four, nothing seems to surprise me much. Probably the biggest shock about the Albany Herald report in this morning’s paper is that it’s just so blatant it’s ridiculous. For those that missed it, it turns out that Anita Williams-Brown received a letter of recommendation from Dr. Joshua Murfree for a principal’s position
in 2001.

Yesterday, we learn that five of six candidates for the school superintendent pulled their names from consideration. With their knowingly illegal acts yesterday, the School Board drove another nail in the coffin for Albany and Dougherty County as far as many people are concerned. For the record, I’m one of them. I’ve been in the middle of taking a break. The pace I had been keeping up here on the blog had gotten to be a bit much, and needed a breather. Unfortunately, the Dougherty County School Board couldn’t accomidate me by not doing something so supremely stupid that I’d have no choice but to jump in.
