Don Buie’s luck hasn’t been what anyone would consider “good” in any way. Thanks to Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards, it just got a little worse.
You see, Edwards has apparently asked the GBI to expand it’s investigation into Buie’s activities as downtown manager to cover all of ADICA’s expenditures. One tidbit that will get a good look is the now infamous facade grant given to ADICA board member Lajuanna Woods. Continue reading His back’s against the wall now

Dougherty County DA has apparently asked the GBI to investigate facade grants issued by ousted ADICA CEO and downtown manager Don Buie. In particular, the Lajuanna Woods grant will get a good, long look from the GBI.

Following the parable of Davy Crocket that Jeff posted about yesterday, I thought a bit about it and realized that perhaps I’ve been to harsh when it comes to downtown development. After all, there are plenty who think it’s essential we have a thriving downtown. While I don’t know that I agree, I do know that a booming downtown would be great. Since so many of our commissioners and ADICA board members are true believers, let’s get something done.
I’m putting up $100 of my own money. It’s not much, but it’s the most I can afford. I’m challenging every proponent in government of downtown redevelopment to step up and match my pledge. Obviously, many are capable of giving much, much more. I urge them to step up and give more. The purpose, to form a non-profit dedicated to redeveloping downtown. In the aftermath of Don Buie, Albany has been torn asunder. Some in office blame the media. Others blame Don Buie, Willie Adams, and Al Lott. Yeah, I’m in that second group. But the fact of the matter is that…it doesn’t matter. Who’s at fault is pretty irrelevant at this point. The GBI is conducting their investigation. Until that is completed and we see what’s what, anything regarding that is pure speculation.
So what do we do next? Continue reading Picking up the pieces

ADICA has apparently finally decided to charge the Dollar Square some rent. Now, the store needs to pony up $4,200 in back rent, then step up on the sole lease that’s been found that charges $700 per month from here on out. Granted, this is still just a drop in the bucket compared to what other places are paying in the downtown area for space rented from ADICA, but it’s a step in the right direction.
And that’s just to start. Continue reading ADICA asks for rent…better late than never

Don Buie is gone, but a long way from forgotten, apparently much to the chagrin of Mayor Willie Adams. In an interview with WALB’s Karen Cohilas, Adams said that the Buie situation was like a cancer in medicine and claims you just cut it out an move on. Mayor Adams would just love that, wouldn’t he?
First, let’s hope that Mayor Adams was just being figurative and simple for the sake of a sound bite, because if this is the way he practices medicine, then I pray no one has died from it. Continue reading Oh what a tangled web

BREAKING NEWS
Karen Cohilas just reported on WALB that apparently, Buie was writing personal checks to cover expenses, would turn in invoices, and after checks were written, would cancel his checks. Specifics weren’t very apparent, and I hope that Cohilas follows this up .
More will be posted as more information becomes available.
[UPDATE 4:54 AM] – It looks like I added my own words and inserted them into Karen’s mouth, since she never actually said the word “personal” as best as anyone can confrim. That’s what I get for writing with a family running around. The blame for that is all on me.

LaJuana Woods receiving $50,000 in the form of a fascade grant that she never should have gotten isn’t remotely in dispute. The ADICA board, however, seems to lack the integrity to actually do a damn thing about it. Phil Cannon, who appears as the lone exception it seems, made a motion that Woods give the money back. Woods had even said she would do just that if asked. But no one made a second on Woods motion, effectively killing Cannon’s motion. Continue reading No integrity on ADICA board

Sources have revealed to SWGA Politics that apparently ADICA was indeed audited in recent years. At least two, as a matter of fact. This information was revealed at today’s City Commission meeting by city finance director Kris Newton.

With everything that’s happened recently, it’s easy to get lost in the details of what everyone has done. Names like Don Buie, Al Lott, LaJuanna Woods, James Taylor, Roger Marietta, and just about anyone else who’s name has crossed the TV screen make easy scapegoats on those grounds enough. However, the root of the problem is much more sinister and much more easily solved.
To start with, let me clarify that I get annoyed by “buzz words”. They tick me off in ways that only a Paris Hilton marathon on every network could possibly tick me off. And yet, I’m about to use one. Continue reading As transparent as mud
