Downtown Brawl not really a shock

Commissioner Bob Langstaff has said that downtown is one of the safest areas of town.  Statistics released indicate the exact same thing.  But after the recent brawl downtown, more and more people are doubting what they’re being told and trusting what they see, and that’s not good for downtown Albany.  Frankly, the only shocking thing about the brawl is that something like this didn’t happen sooner. Buie verdict aftermath

I guess it was all just to much.  Seven hours into jury deliberations, Buie changes his plea to guilty in what has been described as a “teary-eyed” confession to Judge Denise Marshal.  As a result he gets a year in jail, has to pay $5000 in restitution, can’t work for a government entity again, and is banished from Dougherty County.

It’s not close to enough, but it beats what looked like was going to happen. Continue reading Buie verdict aftermath

And don’t even think it’s over

Lajuanna Woods has resigned from the ADICA board. Don Buie’s trial has started. Shanon Buie, Nicole Brown, and Tim Washington have all plead guilty. It’s easy to think that this whole mess is behind us and that everything is just fine. I mean, those who have been implicated seem to be getting what’s coming their way, right?

If you believe that, I’ve got some beachfront property in Northwest Albany to sell you.

First, all that is about settled are these particular cases. There’s still a lot unresolved and unanswered, and those with the authority to address and answer don’t seem interested in actually doing so.

For example, while deputy City Manager James Taylor seems to have ADICA moving in a positive direction, a move he should be applauded for, there needs to be a serious overhaul in how things are done if ADICA is to continue to exist. Two people signing checks isn’t going to cut it either, since some of the questionable checks were signed by ADICA chair Jane Wilson.

There are broken mechanisms in this local government, and so far they haven’t even been looked at in a meaningful way.  The only attempt at oversight has really been Commissioner Roger Marietta’s proposal that ADICA members serve at the pleasure of the Commission, meaning that they could remove members who aren’t doing there job.  Granted, there’s a potential for abuse there too, but that’s where we voters kick in…we oversee the Commission after all.

And none of that will deal with the disaster downtown that is Al Lott.  The man who allegedly doesn’t check references because he never made a poor choice in personnel hasn’t had his wings clipped in the least.  In fact, now he’s telling employees not to answer the “interrogatories” of a committee appointed by our elected officials and even seems to dispute the authority of that committee to ask those questions.  Apparently, in Lott’s world, the people don’t have a right to ask questions or…you know…know anything.

Yes, the whole Buie-gate fiasco is soon to be resolved.  But the situation that permitted all of that to happen still exists.  Unless that underlying system is changed to prevent future abuses, it will happen again.  We are already seeing abuses of a different kind by our city manager who apparently doesn’t believe in open government.

Bouncing Lott into the unemployment line would be a great start in cleaning up our government, but he’s not the only problem.  The City Commission needs to step up and remember that these people (And they themselves) work for us, and should be answerable to us.  If they do that, then maybe there’s a chance for this town.

But at least this isn’t surprising

I missed the initial story. However, I’ve had a couple of sources let me know about it. Albany has made a Forbes list. Usually, this is a source of celebration. Unfortunately for us, this is the “America’s 10 Most Impoverished Cities” list. Though not to worry. Mayor Adams’ response was that he’s “not surprised”.

Doesn’t that just make us feel all tingly? Continue reading But at least this isn’t surprising

Two more bite the dust

For all the city’s bluster and efforts, claiming that downtown is essential for Albany to thrive, we find that two more businesses are closing their doors permanently. Al’s Super Subs and Two Scoops Gellato will soon be gone for good. Lack of foot traffic and a down economy seem to be the root causes.

Meanwhile, the city still believes that reshaping downtown into something it’s not is somehow even possible. On top of that, it thinks it’s essential. Personally, I want some of what they’ve been smoking. Continue reading Two more bite the dust

Buie case going to Grand Jury

The now infamous Buie-gate is enters a new phase as the case against Don Buie is expected to have been presented to the Grand Jury. However, Buie won’t be alone. Also expected to be presented before the Grand Jury is a who’s who of the scandal. Lajuanna Woods, Tim Washington, as well as Buie’s ex-wife will all apparently be presented as well.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

ADICA trying to move foward…the right way

ADICA has been up against the ropes, bloody, and down on points in the late rounds, but it looks like they’re on the way to a come back. During their meeting yesterday, embattled ADICA board member Lajuanna Woods announced that she intends to pay back the $50,000 facade grant that has caused so much…um…let’s just say “interesting conversation”. Moving On…but only in due course

“I had an interesting conversation with a public person. The gist of part of it was …… who knows what the real story was with Buie and the other recipients of funds and what’s the point in dwelling on things that have already happened, so let’s move on and not ‘nit-pick.’

I do not intend to disclose her name and I consider her to be a business friend, but I must acknowledge that there must indeed be a line of thinking that does not want to dig any deeper or hold parties to these events accountable.” – Peter Studl

Peter wrote these words over the weekend, and frankly they disgust me. I’m not angry at Peter over these words. He’s just repeating what he was told. What disgusts me is how “public” people can honestly argue from this position. We may not know the full story behind Don Buie and what I’ve dubbed Buie-gate. But that’s hardly a reason not to learn it. Continue reading Moving On…but only in due course

ADICA meeting reveals a lot

Just when you think Buie-gate has seen it’s last bit of sunlight, it returns from near death to reveal even more of his underhanded dealings. Besides Tim Washington’s revelations about working with Buie to deceive taxpayers, WALB reports that the deal was the only reason Washington came to downtown.

But Channel 10 illustrated that he wasn’t alone. Continue reading ADICA meeting reveals a lot

Busy day for city commission

The Albany City Commission had a busy day yesterday. Dealing with the aftermath of the Don Buie debacle, they decided it was time to save the taxpayers $15,000 and not hire a headhunter to find a replacement downtown manager. In addition, Commission Roger Marietta proposed amending ADICA’s charter so that board members can be removed by a simple vote of the city commission.

Yep, a busy day indeed. But it wasn’t all good. Continue reading Busy day for city commission
