Second District rumors: The next candidate?

Originally posted at TomKnighton.com.

Sanford Bishop was supposedly untouchable.  A prominent Georgia Republican once told me that a challenge against Bishop wouldn’t get backing from the national level due to the demographics of the GA-2.  However, a week ago, Mike Keown damn near nuked Bishop due to voter outrage over things like health care “reform” and TARP I and II.  Things definitely shifted. Mike Keown: Establishment Candidate

It has come to my attention in recent weeks just how stark the difference is between Rick Allen and Mike Keown.

The primary difference, to me, is that Keown is clearly the GOP establishment’s candidate. Keown, after all, is the one that took the trip to DC with Don Cole to have the NRCC decide which of the two of them should be the GOP nominee – even AFTER Lee Ferrell had already announced his candidacy, and while Cole was still the 2nd District GOP Chairman, which is a clear violation of GOP rules banning GOP officials from taking sides in a primary battle. Indeed, the “Cole Question” at the Lee County GOP Breakfast in April was specifically designed to embarrass every other candidate besides Keown, and several inside the GOP have privately decried the action – even many who support Keown.

Keown is also vocally supported by Brad Hughes, who became the new 2nd District GOP Chairman when Cole resigned amidst the controversy of being publicly condemned by Ferrell for his violation of GOP rules. In other words, Hughes is ALSO taking sides in a primary battle.

But both Cole and Hughes pale in comparison to (until recently) Grady County GOP Chairman Jason Sellars.

Rudy Adams: Nothing in common with Mike Keown?

Yesterday, Jeff posted a little something on his Facebook status, like he tends to do from time to time. You see, Rudy Adams is a birther, and Jeff mentioned that was something he and Nathan Deal had in common. Adams just had to comment on it, but really…he shouldn’t have. Kyle Constable has the quote and a screen capture of his comment here.

“You know what Rudy Adams and Mike Keown has in common? NOTHING! Keown believes Obama is a legit President.” – Rudy Adams

Now, this lead me to ask Adams if he was drunk, or just stupid. Continue reading Rudy Adams: Nothing in common with Mike Keown?

Healthcare Package: The Morning After

Last night, after I had drifted off to bed, the President’s healthcare “reform” package.  Reform is in quotes because the term indicates trying to make something better.  This package didn’t.  I’m going to be honest here.  Clinton’s attempt to push through his healthcare package may well have been a true reform attempt.  This measure?  Not so much. House Weighs In On Healthcare Reform Reconciliation Strategy

A source just called to report that the Democrats in the House met on Friday to discuss their options with the healthcare reform bill. With the recent election of Scott Brown in Massachusetts, the Democrats no longer have a filibuster free Senate. The remaining option would be for House members to hold their nose and pass the Senate bill as it stands with the idea that the bill can be fixed later in a process called reconciliation through the use of a sidecar bill.

On Tuesday, House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer said that passing the Senate version was clearly better than doing nothing, and he went on to say that the fix (or sidecar bill) could be passed within 15 days, presumably less time than it will take to seat Brown. This appears to be the last best chance that Congress has to pass this piece of legislation. In the meantime, we are being told that there are not enough votes for the House to pass the bill. Could it be that this gambit is designed to get activists to sit on their hands? Don’t do it! Before they play this behind the scenes maneuver, call your Congressman and tell him or her that you are aware of this plan. Tell them not to sidestep the will of the people. This may be your last best chance to stop this bill.

Don’t Jump George Bailey, The Estate Tax Might Come Back!

These days it seems that Washington has its greedy hands in everybody’s pockets to pay for all of the entitlement programs and stimulus packages. Free health care, ain’t exactly free you know. So, it is surprising to see that the estate tax, also called the death tax, has not been reinstated—yet. You may recall that the Bush administration set out to repeal the death tax. After the threat of a filibuster, Republicans in 2001 opted to phase out the tax through 2010 with the idea that they would totally repeal it at a later date when the political climate was more favorable. That never happened. With no further action from Congress, the tax will resurface in 2011. If you are Jimmy Stewart playing George Bailey in the movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, you may be thinking this could be the year to jump off of the bridge. Not so fast though.
