Downtown Brawl not really a shock

Commissioner Bob Langstaff has said that downtown is one of the safest areas of town.  Statistics released indicate the exact same thing.  But after the recent brawl downtown, more and more people are doubting what they’re being told and trusting what they see, and that’s not good for downtown Albany.  Frankly, the only shocking thing about the brawl is that something like this didn’t happen sooner. Continue reading Downtown Brawl not really a shock

Davis to get three days

Breaking News

WALB is reporting via email that City Attorney Nathan Davis is to be suspended without pay for three days for having a gun in his desk drawer.   Three WHOLE days.

Wow.

Sorry Tommie, it doesn’t work that way

Albany City Commissioner Tommie Postell thinks he’s hit on a great idea. As you probably know by now, he’s opted to not take the insurance provided by the City of Albany, but wants that added to his expense account. It was brilliant, it was bold, and it could change the face of local politics. Continue reading Sorry Tommie, it doesn’t work that way

APD looking at new guns

WALB reports that the Albany Police Department is looking at replacing their SW99 semiautomatic pistols with something else, citing the potential for malfunction despite the fact that there haven’t been problems in the line of duty here in Albany. This is the kind of thing that usually makes my blood boil. This is the kind of thing that usually gets me riled up and yelling for heads on platters and all that.

But not this time. Continue reading APD looking at new guns

Murfree votes ‘Best applicant available’…

…and if you believe that one, I’ve got some beachfront property to sell you in Leesburg.

The vote was necessary to put Murfree in as the Dougherty County Superintendent, despite the controversy surrounding the man. I’m going to let you guess who voted which way. Continue reading Murfree votes ‘Best applicant available’…

Just what the Hell is THAT supposed to mean?

The Albany Herald ran a story in their Sunday edition regarding Dr. Joshua Murfree, the Dougherty School Board’s controversial pick for the Superintendent position. Now, I’ve been critical of Dr. Murfree’s qualifications from the start. He was ranked #34 out of 37 candidates, and has never taught grades K-12. Yes, we parents of Dougherty County have concerns. But when I read this crap, I about flew through the roof:

“Thank you. If it had not been for Martin, Malcolm, Medgar, Emmitt, Lucy Diggs-Slowe, W.E.B., Booker T., George Washington Carver, Sojourner Truth, Jesse, The Little Rock Nine, Wilson and Murfree would really be catching hell. It is our time … If not us then the future of our children is [NOT]!!!

What the hell is this guy smoking? Continue reading Just what the Hell is THAT supposed to mean?

Busy day for City Commission

It was a busy day for the Albany City Commission. It had more money and guns than a bad Hollywood movie about drug dealers or dirty cops. They had a gun found in a desk drawer, money going to the federal government, and a budget. Joy oh joy.

Let’s start with the gun in the drawer. Continue reading Busy day for City Commission

Way to dispell the rumors, Sims

Senator Sims claims she’s been targeted by us vicious bloggers. After all, we’re such a monolithic force in Georgia politics that even the Georgia House pays tribute to us, right?  Of course, she could easily have proven Jeff’s accusations wrong.  All she had to do was change the language on the consolidation bill, the one that gives us a vote on the issue, so that it removed the change from partisan to non-partisan elections that would allow the bill to be exempt from cross-over day.

But she didn’t. Continue reading Way to dispell the rumors, Sims

Sham Email Subpoena Violates Whistleblower’s Constitutional Rights

What follows the break is a press release we received earlier today via email. As this deals with the Phoebe Factoids case, and Attorney General candidate Ken Hodges, I felt that it needed to be shared with you as it appears. My opinions on Hodges is well known, and I won’t go into it any further, but I won’t lie and say this didn’t play into my decision to run this or not.

-Tom Continue reading Sham Email Subpoena Violates Whistleblower’s Constitutional Rights

New Developments in Sims/Consolidation Debacle

When I last reported on the debacle Freddie Powell Sims has gotten herself into in regards to Albany/Dougherty Consolidation (research which the Albany Herald later claimed to have done first – AFTER I did it and emailed it to them), I discussed two things that I want to reexamine today.

The first is the Senate rule that prohibits local bills from passing the Senate before at least one legislative day has expired from the time of introduction to the time of passage.

The second is the infamous House Rule 50.
