By now, you have probably already read Jeff’s post on the fate of SWGAPolitics.com. I wanted to take a few minutes and express my views on the subject.
First, SWGAPolitics was really something special. It introduced me to some wonderful opportunities. For example, it was through this blog that I became a columnist for The Albany Journal. I’ve met quite a few folks in the local media and government and gotten to know some of them very well. I’ve gotten to know Jeff who is truly a close friend. It was something special to be sure. How did I know Phoebe CEO Joel Wernick was less than honest when he said he had no intention of firing anyone with the purchase of HCA Palmyra? Because he left himself an out, saying that people must meet “qualifications”. Many people working at Palmyra left Phoebe. Some of them left under less than ideal circumstances.
Now, WALB is reporting that 20 people were notified today that they will not be continuing on after Phoebe takes over. The reason was the whole “qualification” thing, which obviously has different meanings to different folks. WALB doesn’t have specifics at this time, or at least hasn’t posted them to their website if it does. Frankly though, this whole deal stinks and has from the start.

Sanford Bishop was supposedly untouchable. A prominent Georgia Republican once told me that a challenge against Bishop wouldn’t get backing from the national level due to the demographics of the GA-2. However, a week ago, Mike Keown damn near nuked Bishop due to voter outrage over things like health care “reform” and TARP I and II. Things definitely shifted. Economics is often called “the dismal science”, and frankly it’s not the easiest to understand. Luckily, Aaron Johnson, a Darton economics professor, has started a blog to discuss economics and how they can relate to local politics.
For the record, I don’t agree with Johnson on everything (he tends towards Mankiw‘s ideas from some of his Facebook posts a while back while I’m more of a Milton Friedman kind of guy). However, it’s more tightly focused on economics and worth checking out. Just visit here.

Roy Barnes has a track record as governor. The fact that he lost his bid for reelection eight years ago is pretty telling, but even more telling is the fact that he seems to lack consistency in his own opinions on how a campaign can be run. During the run-off between current nominee Nathan Deal and Karen Handel, Barnes said: Continue reading Roy Barnes: Inconsistency abounds

On a web comment regarding Leesburg City Council candidate Jeff Sexton, someone claimed that they opposed Jeff because he was a libertarian. This person claimed that libertarians want to take down all government, and specifically cited police and fire departments as targets of ours. Now, the ignorance was abundant in this comment. However, there is a misunderstanding on what libertarianism is and what we actually want. Continue reading What is a Libertarian

The following was originally posted over at TomKnighton.com. Yeah, I’m writing a lot more over there but it’s because I’m working more on national level stuff. While the politics of SWGA is still important to me, my focus has been to try and work more on national level issues. If you haven’t yet, please come check it out!
Having a conversation with someone recently, the phrase “gun show loophole” came up. In all fairness, it was a conversation about guns and gun control, so the phrase wasn’t completely random. Unfortunately, as I pointed out to the individual in question, it is mythical. Why’s that you ask? Because there isn’t one. Continue reading There isn’t a gun show loophole

In a recent poll, CNN found that 68% of Americans oppose the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque”. Never mind the fact that it’s not actually on Ground Zero. Never mind that the mosque isn’t exactly new to that community. Let’s ignore all that and make decisions based on emotion, regardless of property rights. Make no mistake folks, this is all this is about. Continue reading Property Rights: An American Anachronism

Now that Al Lott has tendered his resignation, for a whole year from now (at least we can’t say he didn’t give sufficient notice), there’s understandably some question as to what will happen now. That’s more than a fair question, so I’m going to throw my own speculation into the mix. This is based on some conversations with others who follow the local government.
First, Lott isn’t sticking around. That’s the good news. While the end date is set for July 30, 2011, don’t be surprised to see him not working much, much sooner than that. Continue reading Lott resigns…sort of

Or it could be nothing at all.
