[UPDATED] GOP State Committee Member Resigns Over Nathan Deal

I saw this on Facebook today, and asked its author if I could post it here. With his blessing and encouragement, here is a statement from former GOP State Committee Member Michael Carter of Cleveland, Ga.

I recently resigned as a GAGOP State Committee Member so that I could say the following without retribution from the GAGOP. This was a very regretful and most difficult thing for me to personally do! I took this position very seriously and faithfully served the GAGOP and was a very active Member of the State Committee. I attended every meeting and every possible activity and event as a Member of the Committee.

I trust you as well as others can now see that I knew a lot more about Nathan Deal and his unethical, intentional and calculated misconduct when I began to point people to resources to do their own research as good honest Conservatives should do. Nathan Deal’s situation is not simply about helping a family member realize a business dream that failed. His family should be left out of all of this (I mean this from the bottom of my heart) this is about how he has handled everything as a US Congressman and now candidate for Governor of the state of Georgia.

Nathan Deal is a desperate man and we all know that desperate people do desperate things. We do not need a desperate man and the people he surrounds himself with holding and working in the highest office in this state! That is crystal clear!
The real and correct focus of the media and voters should be on all of the deceptive, intentional and calculated actions of Nathan Deal and culpable Members of his Campaign Staff as well as business partners that are culpable in his campaign misconduct for the highest office in this state.

I Lay This One With The Talibaptists

Before we get into this, my definition of “Talibaptist”:

Those so-called “Christians” who judge as the modern Taliban and Biblical Pharisees judge, rather than loving as Christ loved. If you’re a Christian who genuinely loves God’s Image Bearers, I’m not talking to you. If you’re one of the so-called Christians who has 1,000 rules covering every thing a “good” Christian should or should not do, I AM talking to you. Note that this includes “Christians” of all denominations, but I am a Baptist and therefore I have seen this more with fellow Baptists than with other denominations. Also, “Taliepiscopalians”, for example, simply doesn’t roll off the tongue as well.

Anyways, the story, from the AJC:

Last week, Tyler Clementi, a shy, 18-year-old Rutgers University freshman and gifted violist, jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate and another classmate allegedly used a webcam to secretly broadcast his dorm-room sexual encounters with another man. The two classmates have been charged with invasion of privacy, with the most serious charges carrying up to five years in prison.

The suicide shocked and disturbed gay rights activists and others on campus.

“Had he been in bed with a woman, this would not have happened,” said Rutgers student Lauren Felton, 21, of Warren, N.J. “He wouldn’t have been outed via an online broadcast, and his privacy would have been respected and he might still have his life.”

If the people who claimed to be my brothers and sisters actually lived as our Greatest Brother did, this would never have happened. This kid would have known that no matter his personal decisions, God still loved him and so do we. He would not have had to feel the shame that drove him to his death, because he would realize that we ALL sin daily, and in God’s eyes sin is sin. None is any greater or any lesser than any other.

But because of the social stigma the Talibaptists have put on anything related to homosexuality – even as we constantly see news stories of “Christian” pastors known for anti-homosexual stances being outed as bisexual at a bare minimum – these kids feel like they can do nothing except kill themselves rather than be outed.

We as supposed Christ-followers have a SERIOUS problem when we are perceived this way, and until we admit this problem and actively work to correct it, we will continue to lose the very people we were called to win.

In a somewhat related note, Saxby Chambliss has fired the idiot responsible for the “all faggots must die” comment being posted online at a gay blog from his office, and has apologized to the gay community. Kudos, Senator – although it should have been done the instant you found out who it was, not a week later.

Nathan Deal and Fiscal Irresponsibility

Let’s get real about Deal.  This candidate says he believes in fiscal responsibility, going even so far as to introduce a bill in Congress called “The Fiscal Responsibility Act.”

And Nathan Deal is by far and away the least fiscally responsible candidate running for Governor this year.

Barnes balanced the budget every year he was Governor, getting a B from the CATO institute. Nathan Deal sure hasn’t done a great job as a Congressman in balancing the budget.  Now, Nathan Deal is attacking Barnes for proposing a 300 million dollar tax cut for businesses without a plan to pay for it.  Really?  Because, one of the biggest contributions to our national debt has been the Bush tax cuts that were pushed through with no plans to pay for them.  Deal had no problem supporting that mountain of debt (over 2 trillion) added to our grandchildren.  How do we know his prior fiscal irresponsibility won’t carry over into his possible administration?

Barnes spent about 15k on air travel this gubernatorial cycle.  Nathan Deal spent 135k.  We’re talking NINE TIMES what Barnes spent on airplanes.  Of course, it’s no surprise to find that the 135k is going to a company Nathan Deal co-owns.  He’s spending nine times the amount of Barnes to get the same job done.  How do we know his campaign’s fiscal irresponsibility won’t carry over into his possible administration?

And, of course, at this point an entire book could be written about The Deal Financial Scandal.  Deal’s Financial Scandal has more twists and turns than Chutes and Ladders.  There’s a great summary up over at The Perimeter Progressive, but saying that Deal has some personal financial issues at this point would be putting it kindly.  How do we know his personal fiscal irresponsibility won’t carry over into his possible administration?

The next Governor of the great state of Georgia has the legal obligation to balance our budget.  But everything we’ve seen from Deal, from his prior governmental experiences to his campaign experiences to his personal experiences, shows he’s just incapable of actually balancing a budget.  How do we know his fiscal irresponsibility won’t lead our state into financial ruin?

We don’t.

No Deal Georgia.

Lee County Board of Commissioners Meeting Sept 28 2010

The bulk of this meeting – from around the 5 minute mark of Part 1 until around the 6 minute mark of Part 4, of a 58 minute long meeting, was sign ordinance stuff. The video of Commissioner Muggridge I uploaded individually last night is around the 30 minute mark.

Part 1:

Lee County (Republican) Commissioner on Government and Liberty

Interesting to see what Republicans REALLY think about Liberty and Government. And remember, this isn’t a “fluke” of not knowing he was on camera – I sit in the front row of every meeting videotaping, and have been doing it for more than 9 months now, every single meeting.

Open Letter to Lee County Board

Dear Lee County Board of Commissioners:

After making numerous requests for documents pertaining to the sign ordinance amortization clause over the phone and via e-mail, I am filing the attached Freedom of information act request to get the documents. It is clear the board is determined to pass a sign ordinance tonight that is wrong for Lee County and violates the Constitution as well as the Laws of the State of Georgia. For months we have pointed out these legal issues, but the board continues to side with the Southwest Georgia Regional Development Center (SWGRDC), who has been proven multiple times to be misleading with information and steadfast the the ordinance is best applied through strategic application, or in layman’s terms looking the other way.

Over the last two weeks, I have been struggling to get the county to enforce their current sign ordinance on an 8400 acre parcel of land in Northeast Lee County. I have been met continually with the statement, “We only have one code enforcement officer, and sign complaints aren’t urgent unless the involve the safety of the traveling public.” This is a glaring failure of the current Board of Directors. Who now want to increase the amount of regulation without increasing enforcement. This is simply unacceptable.

Patrick Henry stated “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government – lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.”

It is clear that you are willing to violate the Constitution of the United States because the SWGRDC tells you it is alright to do so. Has any board member checked their legal research? I myself had to showed SWGRDC that they were in violation of O.C.G.A 16-7-58(a)(2):

“Your concern over O.C.G.A 16-7-58(a)(2) is a solid concern. I looked it up; although I am not completely certain that the state code is legal, we certainly do not intend for the Leesburg and Lee County ordinance to be the test. Therefore, we will be changing that part of the ordinance to be in compliance with state code.”

Sincerely,
Stephen O’Neil, AICP
Southwest Georgia Regional Commission

Yet they are still willing to move ahead blatantly disregarding this law.

As a Board are you really willing to make a statement that a person advertising a gallon of gas has sign rights that a person advertising a gallon of milk doesn’t? Are you willing to tell a business that they cannot place any political signs at their place business going directly against State law? Are you willing to shut the lights out on church and school signs across the County?

I am asking the board to seek a second opinion from a different consultant outside of the region, one who actually has a sign ordinance in place that has withstood Constitutional arguments. SWGRDC is of the opinion that if a sign ordinance is not or has not been challenged it is Constitutional, this is a very risky choice for the County to follow.

If this sign ordinance is passed tonight, I am putting you on notice that I will personally challenge the Constitutionality/legality of EVERY aspect of this ordinance. Commissioners it is time for you to quit listening to consultants and bureaucrats and read your own document and consider the constitutionality of each limit you are trying to apply. You are the elected officials, and if you don’t understand the document you are instituting, I ask you tenure your resignation as you are not serving the people who you represent.

Sincerely,

Timothy M Nelson

How can we trust any of Nathan Deal’s promises to Georgia?

First let me thank SWGApolitics for inviting me to contribute to their ongoing discussion of Georgia Republican Gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal. I am both stunned and flattered by the interest that my recent Twitter account (NoDealGeorgia) has created, particularly since I am not in any way involved in the gubernatorial race – I’m just an average Georgian: I work a full-time job which is in no way related to politics, I volunteer frequently with my church, I am a youth group leader, I never want to work in politics, I’m not affiliated with any candidate or party, and I happen to think that Nathan Deal is wrong for Georgia.

The focus of this first post will be on integrity…and Nathan Deal’s lack of it. Regardless of party affiliation, I think that all voters can agree that integrity is an important quality in any leader.

The Governor Candidates

All three have been in various news items recently, but there are three news items in particular I want to draw your attention to, in case you missed them:

1) Many Republicans have been claiming Roy Barnes supports illegal immigration. PolitiFact Ga recently gave that claim a “LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE” designation and said that it was absolutely ludicrous. So hopefully those Republicans that still have a shred of dignity left will drop this one, but that leads us into item 2…

2) Apparently, Nathan Deal has paid more than $120K of campaign donations into a company he owns. For the record, this is a company that is a subsidiary of the company at the center of Nathan’s $weetheart deal with the State that he maid MILLIONS of dollars on. This, on top of the recent revelation that he hid nearly $5 million in debt from EXTREMELY poor business decisions. At this point, there truly is no way an honest, ethical person can support this man without a MASSIVE heaping of delusion. He is now officially WORSE than John Oxendine.

3) John Monds was campaigning in Albany yesterday, attending Albany City Commissioner John Howard’s monthly “Town Hall”. I was working yesterday, but Tom was there and the quote in the Herald was spot on: ““The purpose of government is to protect our rights,” Monds said. “Government doesn’t create jobs, business does. Government should get out of the way.”

The Katy Perry Video

For some reason, the following video is causing quite a bit of hand-wringing in certain sectors:

First, let me say that this “controversy” was the first time I’d ever listened to a Perry song, much less watched a video from her.

That said, there is NOTHING wrong with this video. I’ve seen more skin on Sunday morning at Leesburg First Baptist Church than Katy Perry shows in this video. Yet there are those people who may as well deem that all women must wear a full burqa at all times that say this video is “morally degrading” or even “pornographic”. I would expect such terms from people like Ray McBerry, whose brand of “Christian” is so extreme as to make the Taliban look like Hollywood, yet this is from supposedly “mainstream Christians”.

Why Libertarian?

From a note on TX Congressional Candidate John J Myer’s Facebook page:

I am asked “Why don’t you run as a Republican? You could do so much good in the Republican Party”. I should not be upset, after all it’s sort of a compliment “they like me, they really like me”! It’s hard to respond, because I don’t feel like knocking any ones attempt at freedom or smaller government.

As a somewhat influential member of the Libertarian Party, some might take exception to my comment “I believe in Principle before Party”. I do believe this, but let me say I also believe the Libertarian Party needs to flourish and become a true option for the American people.

It would be silly for me to tell people that they should not always vote for party and then tell them that they should only vote for mine. However, I would like to take this time to explain the many reasons why I believe people should run, and vote Libertarian.

But My Teacher Says……:

I was forwarded a letter the other day from the Texas Secretary of State, it was an instructional tool for teachers to help them explain to students why we have a two party system. It went on to say that “it helps preserve majority rule in a democratic state.” If you know me, you would understand why this completely gets under my skin. We don’t have a two party system, if you look in the constitution you will not find any mention of having parties whatsoever. I am quick to point out that words majority rule, democratic, democracy, etc are also all not found in the constitution. Not once.
