Republicans distancing themselves from McBerry

Ray McBerry, and is past escapades with teen aged girls, has so far just netted him some bad press.  However that seems to be changing.  To start with, Karen Handel, another candidate for governor going on record as not being a McBerry fan.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Jim Galloway reports that Mrs. Handel’s spokesman said: Continue reading Republicans distancing themselves from McBerry

State Agriculture Commisioner Refuses to Investigate

I called the Commissioner’s office about 9:30AM today to report a potential health risk, caused by a company that services the food production industry. At 2PM today I received a call from Commissioner Tommy Irvin telling me I needed to apologize to his administrative assistant. Only in Georgia government can one get a call back from a State Constitutional Officer about bad manners rather than an issue that is putting the residents of GA, FL and AL at risk.

Mr Irvin refused to send an investigation team to a plant that supplies unsanitary linens to peanut mills, pecan processors, bars and restaurants across the Southeast, clearly something under the arm of agriculture.

Mr, Irvin I gave you an ultimatum on the phone either protect the citizens of Georgia or turn your back and you sir chose to turn your back!

Steve Kitchens to resign

Just heard about this more to follow!

[UPDATE from Jeff]:

I just spoke to sources who say that Leesburg City City Councilman (and Mayor Pro-Tem) Steve Kitchens will resign due to personal situations. This will be announced Tues night at the Leesburg City Council meeting, where the process will begin to call a special election to replace him. It is expected that qualifying for the race will be the same time as Independent/third party qualifying in July, with the election potentially occurring in September.

I do intend to run in this election, and because of this I will not be writing about it on this site. I will be re-working my old campaign site, http://www.jefferysexton.com, over the next few days and weeks, and that is where you will be able to see my writings on this race and other Leesburg-specific issues.

Thomas to challenge Stone

Albany businessman and Dougherty County Taxpayers Association chief instigator Richard Thomas has just qualified to run against Jack Stone for Stone’s Dougherty County Commission District 6 seat.  Thomas qualified as a Democrat for the partisan race.

Keep checking back for more information as it becomes available.

Welcome to the new world

I’m a cynical cuss sometimes, and I know it.  Anything less than real freedom isn’t close to enough for me, and I’m vocal about it.  For me though, the touchstone of a free society is how the treat firearms.  Ultimately, more gun freedom will ultimately equal other freedom, come hell or high water.  Yesterday, Georgia became a lot more free. Judge to McBerry: “Leave the Girl Alone”

As if the material that originated on this site wasn’t bad enough for McBerry, see this article from Jim Galloway – a professional journalist, and one of the best (if not THE best) professional political journalists in the State.

I don’t normally do this, but that last sentence and this paragraph are all I’m going to write here. Read on:

Finally, in December 2002, a couple from church caught the pair together on a dirt road — McBerry and Rachel had arrived at the rendezvous in separate cars. Linda Pittman went to the Henry County school board. McBerry abandoned his teaching job.

On Jan. 17, 2003, the mother brought McBerry before Henry County Magistrate Wesley J. Shannon, on charges of interference with custody, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

McBerry had an attorney. The Pittmans didn’t. Examining his files this week, Shannon said the parents didn’t present enough evidence for an arrest warrant. But they raised enough suspicions, the judge said, that he signed an order requiring McBerry to stay away from their daughter for six months.

“If I was to take an educated guess as to what I was doing at the time,” the judge said, “I was putting the ball in his court — saying, ‘Do you want to go to jail? Leave the girl alone.’ ”

Qualifying: 3 Days In, 1.5 Days to Go

With three days of qualifying down, a few more surprises were in store yesterday.

The biggest surprise is the rumor that seems to have a good deal of credibility that Austin Scott will NOT qualify for Governor OR Lt Governor, but will instead qualify to challenge Jim Marshall for Congress in the 8th District.

Last night, both Roger Hines and Harold Logsdon announced that they were dropping out of their races (State School Superintendent and Insurance Commissioner, respectively). No word on what prompted Mr. Hines’ decision, but Mr. Logsdon’s decision was prompted by a battle with prostate cancer, and our prayers are with him and his family in this difficult time.

The Governor’s race is now shaping up, with Jeff Chapman, Karen Handel, and Ray McBerry joining the GOP race after Nathan Deal, Eric Johnson, and Otis Putnam having done so on Monday and Tuesday. On the Democratic side, Carl Camon, former Governor Roy Barnes, and General David Poythress joined the race yesterday after current House Minority Leader Dubose Porter had qualified Monday. John Monds was nominated by the Libertarian Party Saturday.

Sine Die Live Blog… Or Is It?

Once again, Georgia’s premier political blogs, including this site, Peach Pundit, Georgia Unfiltered, and Georgia Liberal will team up to offer an unprecedented level of live coverage of the second of the two big days in the Georgia Legislative Session – Sine Die.

While you wait on the coverage to begin around 8:30, or if you’re just getting here and want something else to do, check out this post from the guys over at Lobbyists for Life and Liberty. They’re normally a bit extreme/neophyte for my tastes, but I think they may be on to something with this one. More than likely mental masturbation, but it could turn out to be an actual story.

Primaries – What a waste of taxpayer money!

I’m still trying to get across to some the stupidity of Primary elections being paid for by the tax payers. Seriously folks, what is the purpose, why do we have political parties if their candidates are chosen by non members?

I have two schools of thought on the matter, the first being it gets them 3 months of uncontested advertising, because no 3rd party already on the Nov ballot should waste their time and money prior to all candidates being placed on the ballot. The second is that the only way the party could afford to choose a candidate fairly requires tax dollars and they know they can’t run a budget tight enough to do it without tax dollars.

I am amazed at the Tea Party groups that want fiscal conservatism yet let this blatant waste of tax payer money take place put your money where your mouth is either become a card carrying member of a Political party then help choose your parties ONE candidate per race, or wait until Nov to exercise your “Independent “vote.

When I mentioned this at a tea party meeting last night someone stated, “You have to have primaries” the truth is NO you don’t and NO you shouldn’t and anyone on the fiscally Conservative bus should be on this train of thought.

That Forbes list? Ain’t as good as it sounds

The Albany Herald ran the story. The Economic Development Commission apparently gave it to them. The whole purpose was to supposedly highlight the good news that Albany made Forbes’ list of Best Small Places for Business and Careers. Our rank, 179th, isn’t that high but that’s OK right? After all, we’re on the list.

Of course, so is everyone else. Continue reading That Forbes list? Ain’t as good as it sounds
