For several days now, when I have mentioned Ray McBerry on Facebook or Peach Pundit, Stephen Vasil has attempted to use a particular ad hominem attack on me because he cannot refute what I have been claiming about McBerry (that is is an absolute stark raving lunatic).
The particular ad hominem he tries to use is asking me how many votes I received in my bid for Leesburg City Council last year. This, despite the fact that he full well knows my numbers – he’s simply trying to embarass me with them.
For an unknown guy who has only lived in town to go up against the sitting Mayor Pro Tem who has lived in town for more than 40 years and pull what I did is nothing to be embarrassed about in my book though.
For the record, I received 20 of 90 votes cast, for 22.22% of the vote.
Now, over the past 24 hours or so, I’ve been considering a proposal for Vasil and any other McBerry supporter who wanted to take me up on it, but it turns out there is this Stupid Morality Law (SML!), namely OCGA 16-12-21(a)(2) which states:
A person commits the offense of gambling when he makes a bet upon the partial or final result of any game or contest or upon the performance of any participant in such game or contest.
So I can’t make this proposal to Vasil, or any other McBerry supporter who may have taken me up on it, because it violates this Stupid Morality Law (SML):
1) I’m willing to bet you $100 that Ray McBerry gets less of a percentage of the vote in his race this year than I got in my race last year.
I can’t make that proposal due to the Stupid Morality Law (SML), though it would have been a pretty decent amount of income for me, depending on exactly how many took me up on it. As I told Tom this morning though, I’d feel kinda guilty about it, because it is basically a tax on the stupid and/or insane. But I can’t do it anyway, due to the Stupid Morality Law (SML).
IF they were willing to take me up on the first proposal though (and ONLY IF), I was willing to make them a second proposal:
2) I’m also willing to bet $100 that Ray McBerry gets less votes in the City of Leesburg this year than I got last year.
I can’t make that proposal either due to the Stupid Morality Law (SML), but that is essentially a double or nothing for me from the first one. I’m decently sure I would win it, but McBerry DID pull 27 votes from Leesburg in 2006 (when I still lived in Albany) against a single challenger – Sonny Perdue. So I was relatively confident I could win this proposal as well and double up on my earnings, but if I didn’t, I hadn’t actually lost anything either.
But like I said, this is all just a matter of a hypothetical nature, since Ga law prohibits actually making such a bet.
Still, the General Assembly has 6 working days left to pass a repeal of OCGA 16-12-21 out of one chamber and into another, and 10 working days after that to pass it out of the second chamber and onto the Governor.
I know a few legislators read this blog. How about y’all help ease the unemployment crunch and pass this repeal? It won’t actually employ anyone, but it COULD provide a source of income for some!
[CORRECTION] Removed reference to Vasil being the Chair of the East Metro LP. Per Marshall McCart on my FB page, Vasil resigned that position more than 2 months ago. I honestly did not know that prior to Marshall correcting me. Apologies to my East Metro brothers and sisters for tarnishing their name.
What do you mean that “Stephen Vasil has attempted to use a particular ad hominem attack on me . .”? Has he said your character is bad and therefore you should be disregarded or has he said that because you are a loser you can’t evaluate Ray McBerry? Ad hominem is a specifi term in rhetoric and logic and does not denote a personal attack which seems what you are accusing Vasil of.
Don’t let him get under your skin. Sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never harm you.
I have tried hominem several times with great expectations thinking I would like them (because I love grits and corn and similar foods). But they are just ho-hum — even with butter. Maybe it’s because they were from a can. Has anyone ever had fresh hominem?
Kevin,
+1, we could use a little more humor around here.
