[UPDATED] Lee County Government Events Tonight

If I’ve read these signs in Leesburg correctly (I’ve been driving down the road when I passed them), there will be a public forum regarding the enhancements to the Robert B Lee/Lovers Lane Rd project from 4p – 6p. I’ll call Bob Alexander in County Planning today and update this if necessary.

[UPDATE] This event is actually THURSDAY afternoon, not this afternoon. Time is correct though.

Also tonight, at 6p in the Courthouse Annex is the regularly scheduled meeting of the Lee County Board of Commissioners.

The agenda can be found here, and the agenda packet is here.

I’m working on finishing the video uploads from the Feb 11 meeting right now, but based on those discussions here are my own recommendations for votes on the items on the Agenda:

I have absolutely no problems with any matters in items 5-9 (first 4 items are procedural stuff).

On the matters of item 10, I recommend approval of item A only because we’ve already signed the agreement to allow this grant to happen. I like Lee County Magistrate Court’s use of private bonding services better than government operated ones, but at least this is one government program that claims to be self sufficient once started and actually seems believable in that claim.

I recommend NOT approving Langstaff Marketing’s new proposed Lee County Logo, because it looks absolutely horrid. I know those guys and gals probably worked very hard on it, and I’m sorry they wasted their time. I did like the print layouts Mrs. Langstaff presented, and I would hope they could create a new logo based more on the print layouts – such as with a full oak tree being more prominent, perhaps.

I recommend approval of the Rails to Trails program. Recreation is one thing that is desperately needed in Lee County, particularly walking/biking trails of this sort. In fact, just this past weekend I was driving down Oakland Rd and saw someone walking along the side of the road (clearly for exercise purposes) as several vehicles passed, and this lady was not 500′ from where the Rails to Trails trail would have crossed that road. I know Commissioner Roland will object to spending any money in the southern end of the county (where the bulk of the population lives, as I’m sure the Census will show), but this needs to happen. It has been done in at least one other area of Georgia that I know of, on the Silver Comet trail, and that is an EXTREMELY popular path for walkers, joggers, and bikers.

The Rails to Trails trail would also encourage some business growth nearby, in convenience stores and possibly health/exercise related stores as well. All in all, it will be a successful venture for the growth of the County, and that would be a very good thing indeed.
