Gun owners can sure be a paranoid lot. It’s not like there’s no reason for them to be either. Their Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms is constantly under attack by someone. There’s always someone who seems to think that rights are pliable and should be restricted because of a perception of danger.
However, law enforcement doesn’t help when they investigate people who’s only crime is buying more than one gun at a time.
WALB’s report really just confirmed some rumors that have been floating around the gun community for a few years now, but they were rumors I typically dismissed. After all, these are the same people who get worked into a fuss because a bill to take away all guns is introduced despite the fact that it’ll never make it out of committee. I know, I’m one of these guys who also happens makes it a point to study the bills first.
Frankly, I find it disgusting that law enforcement is investigating people who have no evidence of having done something wrong. After all, guns aren’t the only regulated item one could sell illegally. Am I going to be investigated for buying two cases of Irish Whiskey? Of course not. The mere suggestion of doing so would get you a raised eyebrow at the very least.
I understand the concern about guns in the hands of criminals. But, like any other crime, there are other indicators of someone who commits a “straw buy” than just how many guns someone buys. At the very least, someone who has an illegally obtained gun would be willing to turn on their buddy for a little less prison time, just like with most anything else. There is no honor among thieves thankfully.
But no. Instead, law abiding people may have to explain their perfectly legal actions to law enforcement, despite there being no evidence of a crime actually being commited. Heaven forbid someone be a collector with a little extra money in their pocket. Lord help the couple who decide they need firearms for their own protection and buy them together.
Why is it that so many get their undies in a twist over guns? Otherwise rational people will wet themselves and trample over the Bill of Rights when the subject of guns comes up. They will dismantle all that makes this nation great in an effort to protect us from this “boogie man”, despite evidence that cars kill far more people every year than guns (and that doesn’t even figure in Toyota and their gas peddle issues).
Why not let law enforcement focus on…oh, I don’t know…criminals, and let the law abiding go about their lives? Novel concept, ain’t it?
Guns are not the evil. Why do we as a society, bend over backwards to blame anyone or anything other than the real cause of injury, misery, and death.
Hold the criminal accountable. Not his parents. Not his teachers. Not his friends. Not his neighbors. Not his bad childhood. Not his economic circumstance. Not his bad breaks. Not his church. Not his car. Not his gun. Not his fellow citizens who own guns.
Excellent post, Cartman. You hit the nail on the head.
Those who think of guns as the evil of the world haven’t looked in the eye at true evil.
The causal link between criminal attacks and evil firearms is much like the link between obesity and irresponsible eating utensils.
