Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire

Dr. Sandra Cannon Scott of Augusta is the most recent Democrat to enter the contest for State School Superintendent.

Dr. Scott only two months ago finished a campaign for State Senate District 22, where she placed dead last behind two fellow Democrats and the Libertarian, Taylor Bryant. Barely three weeks later, she filed to run for State School Superintendent.

I have not been able to find out much about her so far – the vast majority of what I have is from the sporadic press coverage she received in her SD-22 bid. Perhaps the most detailed coverage of Scott is on this page, where she and the other candidates in SD-22 answer several questions about that race.

Among her answers that seem to readily apply to her current race:
Q: What made you decide to run?
A: Having been a professional educator for all of my adult life in diverse academic environments including pre-k through 12, a technical college, a private liberal arts college and a public university with undergraduate and graduate academic programs, I found myself in a position where I was receiving another calling on my life from the creator who had allowed me to “Be still, and know that he is God.” Obediently, I resumed my duties as a Sunday School teacher and became a part of the prison
ministry at Transformation United Methodist Church where I already served as Minister of Music. It was behind the prison walls where I actually found the freedom to be released from bondage and to accept the new calling.

Q: What sets you apart from your opponents?
A: New, fresh and full of positive potential, I am the candidate who is not a part of Augusta’s political past that has helped to create the current status quo. I am set apart from my opponents in many ways — some visible and some not. Those that are not visible include my innate abilities for creative, outside-of-the-box thinking; genuine compassion for humankind; generosity almost to a fault; and a quest for living the abundant life for myself and everyone with whom I come in contact.

Then, of course, there was one forum where she broke out in song during the middle of the discussion, as seen on this news report:

Can this newcomer hope to topple Dr. Beth Farokhi of Cobb County and Brian Westlake of Gwinnett County to become the Democratic nominee for State School Superintendent? Is she electable if she does? Honestly, I need more information before I can make an educated prediction there. I don’t think the singing helps matters any though – nor does the fact that she lost to a Libertarian once already.
