2nd District Congressional Race

It may be one of the coldest winters on record, but things may be about to heat up in Georgia’s Second Congressional District. At least three, possibly four, candidates are running on the Republican side to challenge Congressman Sanford Bishop.

Mike Keown entered the race early. He currently serves as a State Representative and a pastor for the Coolidge Baptist Church. Keown has some political experience, but he is running as the common man citing that he loves to fish, hunt, ride motorcycles and dirt track cars, and has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Mike Keown says on his web site that he has earned a Doctorate, but he is not the only candidate to earn a PhD. Rudy Adams received a PhD too. Adams has a youtube campaign advertisement Judging from his web site, Adams does not appear to have ever held a political office. He is running as an average citizen. He mentions that he is a member of several civic organizations, but he is not specific as to which ones. He has flown in an aerial application business for farmers, is a Master Farrier, has worked in law enforcement, and is a Vietnam Veteran.

What Is Wrong With This Picture?

The picture here is from the anti-victim press conference today hosted by the Georgia Talibaptist Association (aka the “Christian” Right, and specifically -from Jim Galloway – the Georgia Christian Alliance, the Georgia Christian Coalition, Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition, and the Georgia Baptist Convention).

There are a couple of things interesting about it:

Upcoming Lee County Elections!

Qualifying fees for the two boards have been set: $159.62 for County Commission seats and $24 for School Board posts. Those fees are equal to 3 percent of board members’ base yearly salary: $5,320.56 for the Commission and $800 for the School Board.

District 1 and 3 seats for both the commission and the Lee School Board are up for grabs…If you are a Libertarian and want to fill these seats get with me and I’ll work out getting these fees paid for your run!

Note to Hodges, get YOUR house in order first

Last week, Attorney General Candidate Ken Hodges announced that if he becomes AG, he’ll create a civil rights office. Now, this was met with a lot of various responses, which is normal for any new office in a state department. After all, it’s our taxes at work and to many, that’s grounds to not open anything new.

What is quite interesting though is that Hodges is being sued…again. And this time? Oh yeah, it’s the kind of thing a civil rights office would investigate…again. Continue reading Note to Hodges, get YOUR house in order first

On the Floor Today: Monday, February 1, 2010

House: (link):

  • HB 651, Rep Amy Carter’s bill changing the way the sexual offender registry is provided to each school
  • HB 926, Rep James Mills’ bill limiting the obligations of banks in certain circumstances

Jeff’s Thoughts: 651 seems to be an easy way to save the State a pretty decent amount of money on postage and paper by using online delivery methods instead of paper – excellent idea! On 926, I’m always leery of limiting liability. It MAY be warranted here, but I would urge caution.

No Senate Rules Calendar was available online at the time of this writing.

In Committee Today: Monday, February 1, 2010

Senate Public Safety Committee (pdf):

  • SB 287, Senator Judson Hill’s bill to mandate that a new number be issued when a drivers’ license is reported as stolen or forged.
  • SB 318, Senator Jack Murphy’s bill to mandate that an affidavit from an expert must accompany any lawsuit alleging professional malpractice against certified peace officers.
  • SB 324, Senator Grant’s bill to specifically allow the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council to impose administrative fees for services provided.

Jeff’s Thoughts: 287 looks solid to me, 318 I’m not sure about and would like to see that discussion, 324 seems like a back-door tax increase on law enforcement officers, but I would love to be convinced that such isn’t the case, if possible.

Senate Natural Resources and the Environment Committee (pdf)

  • SB 303, Senator John Douglas’ allowing certain types of pythons and anacondas to be kept as pets under a wild animal license.

Jeff’s Thoughts: I have a philosophical problem with needing a license for property, but I’m assuming current law doesn’t allow these animals to be possessed at all, so under that assumption I’m going to say I think this bill is very good in that at least it allows the possession of this property at all.
