2010: The Year We Fight Back

Much talk has been happening in Republican circles about “fighting back” against the Democrats this year. The problem is, Republicans were little different when they were in power than Democrats are now. The bailouts, “stimulus”, TARP, No Child Left Behind, PATRIOT Act, both unconstitutional wars we are currently involved in, and Medicare Part D (the GOP version of Obamacare) were all GOP creations.

The GOP, both in Georgia and across the nation, has proven over and over that when it comes to issues of lower taxes, more freedom, and less government involvement in our lives, they absolutely cannot be trusted. They have proven over and over again – as recently as TODAY – that they are more interested in good-ole-boy back room deals than in actually protecting our rights.

But people are waking up to that more and more. They realize that the GOP and the Democrats are just opposite sides of the same coin.

Fortunately, we have an answer for this problem.

Gary Horlacher Responds to Brian Kemp’s Appointment as SoS

The following statement was issued by Gary Horlacher in response to Governor Perdue’s announcement today that he was appointing Brian Kemp to be the interim Secretary of State. If any candidate has a press release about any issue, make sure it gets in my hands and I’ll get it up here.

Here we go again!

Karen Handel backs out of the remainder of her term-of-office as Secretary of State, so that she can focus on her race for Governor, continue raising money, and oh yea, not inject partisan politics into a race that she is involved in, while she is conducting the fundamental role of the Secretary’s office, fair and nonpartisan election oversight. But do Governor Perdue and Brian Kemp agree with her. Clearly NO!

I guess we know who Sonny’s pulling for

With the resignation of Secretary of State Karen Handel, someone’s got to do the job.  So, it goes to…

Brian Kemp, who’s running for the Secretary of State job.  The press release: Continue reading I guess we know who Sonny’s pulling for

“Meaningful” Ethics Reform

At the very front of what I’m about to say, let me note that this is just an idea I’ve been thinking about that may or may not work. Based on my own thinking right now, I think it might, and it is certainly a different approach than what we’ve got right now, which is largely a paper tiger. Obviously, the point in writing this at all is that I would like public discussion on it, so feel free to have at it!

Sam Olens told me a couple of weeks ago that if the Cobb County Commission violates the State’s transparency laws, they can be fined a whopping $100 per occurrence, and suggested that for the laws to have any real teeth, there needed to be an extra zero on that number.

That was the quote in particular that has stuck with me since that interview, floating in the back of my mind. As with many of my solutions, after percolating back there for a while, it finally comes to me, as this one has:

Don’t Jump George Bailey, The Estate Tax Might Come Back!

These days it seems that Washington has its greedy hands in everybody’s pockets to pay for all of the entitlement programs and stimulus packages. Free health care, ain’t exactly free you know. So, it is surprising to see that the estate tax, also called the death tax, has not been reinstated—yet. You may recall that the Bush administration set out to repeal the death tax. After the threat of a filibuster, Republicans in 2001 opted to phase out the tax through 2010 with the idea that they would totally repeal it at a later date when the political climate was more favorable. That never happened. With no further action from Congress, the tax will resurface in 2011. If you are Jimmy Stewart playing George Bailey in the movie, It’s A Wonderful Life, you may be thinking this could be the year to jump off of the bridge. Not so fast though.

A lot of nothing

I certainly understand why some governmental bodies need to meet just about every week.  They have a lot to do and they are responsible for a lot of services for their constituents and they accomplish a lot, for good or ill.  They really do so much that they’re going to need every meeting they can get.

But I don’t quite get why the Dougherty County Commission feels that they need to meet that often. Continue reading A lot of nothing
