Charity to tyranny

It seems innocent enough.  Let’s take care of the poor.  I mean, who could oppose that?  I certainly don’t.  The vast majority, on some level, are in favor of helping those less fortunate than they are.    People hit hard times, and can use a helping hand, so this is something most of us can agree to, right?

That is, unless the helping hand is offered at the tip of a gun.

Welfare.  Universal healthcare.  Free cell phones.  Everywhere we go, there’s some new program to help the “less fortunate”.  And I have called this programs a type of tyranny.  I’ll continue to call it that for one simple reason.  I have no say in the process.

You see, freedom also means the freedom to be a jerk and not help the poor.  It means having the freedom to pick and choose what programs get your money, if any.  If I don’t want to finance free cell phones for people, then why should I?  Freedom to choose is a fundamental principle in this country, one so basic that the Founding Fathers didn’t even bother to put it in the Bill of Rights.  However, do-gooder mentality has robbed us of part of that right.

You see, people look around and they see bad things.  They say “someone should do something!”  The thing is, they don’t want to do everything that it would take to do it themselves, so they seek out government.  After all, government has the resources, right?  Of course they do…when they take it from us.  What these do-gooders do, and they tend to know what they’re doing on this, is making us be altruistic.  They’re forcing us to help out the poor, and rest well on their own self righteousness.  After all, they helped the poor.

Slowly but surely, we’re being turned into a society that is being convinced that we should live to serve our fellow man.  On the surface, that doesn’t sound so bad, right?  Plenty of people have thought so.  Unfortunately, they’re people like Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Castro, and Mao…just to name a few.

Yeah, I named a bunch of communists, and the do-gooders will be the first to tell you that they’re not communists, and usually they’re not.  But what they are is ignorant of the results.  You see, humanity needs struggle.  It’s what makes us better, makes us whole.  When you push forward through that struggle, people blossom.  We’re a lot like a lump of coal.  We’re useful as is, but when enough pressure is exerted, we become something amazing.

But some don’t want to be diamonds.  They’re content being coal.  That’s their right, and I’m actually pretty cool with them being coal.  We need people like that, just like we need the diamonds.  But the do-gooders don’t see the need for anyone to become diamonds.  They seek to insulate everyone to a point that there’s no need.

What’s that you say?  They’re only trying to help the poor, not everyone?  Guess where the best success stories come from?  The ghetto.  You see, the do-gooders, in their efforts to help people, remove the incentive to become a diamond from millions.  Most people are content with their basic needs being met with minimal effort.  The do-gooders merely make sure that happens…and so many of those people remain content in their ghettos.  After all, why strive to succeed when I can just sit here and draw a check?

So you see, they take from us and give to the poor.  Almost Robin Hood like of them, right?  Not really.  Robin Hood took from the moochers of society and gave back to those who were taxed to support the moochers.  Robin Hood would be a domestic terrorist today.  What really happens is that we are force to be “charitable”, despite that being the antithesis of what charity really is.

They successfully turn charity into tyranny.

Okay, Tom. Sometimes I agree fully with you and sometimes I disagree fuly with you. This morning, however, you have pushed MOST of my buttons.

You see, I AM a do-gooder. I believe that one of our purposes on this planet is to help our fellow man and woman. The free cell phone idea REALLY pushes my buttons though. I have a cell phone. And I pay a fee for having it every single month.

And I am an “old” lady why is about to try to live on the $981 in social security benefits the government is graciously going to give me for having worked the last 47 yeas. I may not have my cell phone too much longer either.

    But while I am a do-gooder, I don’t believe in give-aways forever.

A person who has worked hard for years and gets laid off deserves the unemployment they get until they can find another job. I also think they deserve some food stamps if they can’t make ends meet on unemployment and who can.

And I think welfare is a great idea. For a couple of years. While the recipient gets more education or a better job. Or a disabled person who cannot work and lets face it, some disabled people are not ABLE to have a job. Notice I said some. Many disabled people ARE able to work and willing to do so.

The Bible says “the poor ye shall have with ye always” and I believe that. And I believe that if our government can help the less fortunate, then they should. But welfare and other social programs were never intended to be a way of life but that’s what so many have become.

But all in all, it is up to us, the Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians, Socialists and Communists to assist our fellow man and woman.

So I agree that the government should not be that involved but it SHOULD be involved to aq point.

Where’s my free phone? While you’re at it, I’d like a car, welfare checks, and some health insurance too. Throw some housing in for good measure. And feed my children while they’re at school. And don’t expect a “Thank You” either!

Lending a helping hand is one thing, but to quote the notable Charles Brown, “Good Grief!”

We are far beyond “helping the poor”. We have been “creating the poor” for several generations now. True professionals–at being deadbeats.

I don’t believe anyone in or out of the Federal government knows the extent of visible and invisible programs and monies allocated to help “the poor”.

We are in such bad financial shape now that “the poor” may soon be cut off–there won’t be any more money to give.

I didn’t work all my life to support today’s deadbeats. My interest in “helping the poor” as we now define them has long since vanished. I am fed up!
