Weds night, we received an email through the Contact Us page asking if we had heard anything about a new challenger to Sanford Bishop. Bill replied that he had. Apparently, the guy had issued a press release in Thomasville earlier this month, where he is popular with the local Tea Party crowd.
I did some research on the name Bill gave, and I found this article from the Thomasville Times-Enterprise from nearly three weeks ago – and almost NOTHING else. As in this profile page from his current employer is literally the only thing that I’ve found so far other than the Times-Enterprise article.
The guy’s name is Bobby Brown, and he is a former Thomas County Commissioner. Meaning that both current GOP challengers hail from the same County at the same extreme end of the 2nd District.
I LOVE the fact that we will have a Primary, and I genuinely look forward to discussing the issues with both candidates.
However, from a strategic view, first glances here hardly look good. Here we have two candidates from the same geographic area of the District, in an area that apparently already leans heavily GOP but is less populous than other areas of the District, such as Valdosta, Dougherty/Lee County, and Columbus. Neither man has much – if any – name recognition outside of Thomas County, and both are trying to defeat a well known and popular Democratic incumbent.
Even with recent votes such as Healthcare, Cap and Trade, bailouts, and others, you have to remember that with many of these votes, Bishop has made the 54-60% of people that typically vote for him even happier, thus solidifying his base and potentially winning over new converts that like those particular votes.
I make no secret that I want Bishop out, as I see him a major threat to Liberty and his potential replacements at least as less of a threat.
I’m simply noting that this battle is going to be a long, uphill fight with very little major for error and chances of success that are 50/50, at BEST.
Still, I wish both candidates – and any others who join – good luck, and I very much look forward to hearing what they have to say on the issues.
I had heard about this a little while back. It’s interesting actually. But I can say with confidence that Mike Keown will be the nominee. He’s been in the state General Assembly and his credentials far outweigh Brown’s. I’m happy to see there’s a primary, but I’ll tell you, it’s going to be a swift and easy victory for Keown.
And in regards to the general election, Sanford Bishop better watch out because Keown’s getting around the district and rallying quite the anti-Bishop army!
I donated to Keown’s money bomb and have been passing the word that he is running, only because he has stood up to run. But, being a politician is not a good recommendation for any candidate these days. Politicians are the problem. This includes Republicans in the state house. To many people who have awakened politically over the last year, being a politician is a red flag on a candidate’s resumee. The Republican party has been totally discredited and we must realize it. To beat Bishop we must have a candidate who has a fire in his belly to restore Constitutional rule to the government. Not just, “I’m not Bishop”.
