Buie trial takes interesting turn

The one questionable piece of evidence in the whole Buie-gate fiasco was the recanted affadavit by Nicole Brown.  After all, that was the piece that launched the whole investigation, and with Brown claiming that she was coerced into giving it, there was a shroud of doubt.  But Brown’s testimony Wednesday in the trial of Don Buie shed light on the whole situation.

Should Voters Have the Right to Determine Their Leaders?

Yesterday, I got into a twitter debate with two people I consider friends, if only online. One of them was State Insurance Commissioner Candidate Gerry Purcell.

The subject of this particular debate was term limits.

Term limits are always popular by the minority party. They claim that power corrupts, and the longer an elected official is in office, the more corrupt they become. They claim that the “system is biased” in favor of the incumbent. They claim that the “uninformed” skew elections and allow the lesser candidate to pull out the W.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am a Libertarian. I am also a man that ran for City Council against a 2 term incumbent who has lived in this city for 40+ years, compared to my 2 yrs. I know all about longshot candidacies and how the incumbent doesn’t have to do much to win an election, even when the incumbent is truly the worst available candidate.

But one of my core principles is that people should be able to choose for themselves their leaders. This is also an American principle, one that millions of men and women have fought in our military, bled, and died for over the course of our history. Because of this, I can in no way support term limits, as it limits this right.

You see, government-imposed term limits says “You don’t know what is best for you. We do.” This is the very Big Brother mentality that in nearly any other context, these very people that enthusiastically support term limits would be railing against.

Self determination an American ideal

From 1775 to 1783, our forefathers fought a great and noble war against the British. Freedom was the ultimate goal, but it encompassed many ideals that are as important today as they were 230 years ago. Ideals like no taxation without representation, for example. Another one was the idea that the people had a right to self determination, deciding how they would be governed.

Four members of the County Commission seem to miss that. Continue reading Self determination an American ideal
