Picking your tyranny

Americans love freedom.  We thrive on it and expect it.  Or, well, we sort of do.  I mean, obviously I want freedom for the things I do, and you want freedom for the things you do, but do we Americans really want freedom?  Do we even really understand the concept?  Or, do we instead pick tyrannies based on our own moral compass and damn the rest? Going into this post, let me note that what I am about to say is things I have known since April. Indeed, I knew them before Casey Cagle dropped out of the GAGOV race – when I was FAR more unknown than I am now. At the time, several of us bloggers had a conversation about whether to run with the things you’ve been hearing about Cagle so far this week on PeachPundit and GriftDrift‘s sites, among others. We didn’t have any concrete proof, so we decided to hold off at the time.

On David Ralston

Much has been said over the last week or so about David Ralston running for Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives. The basic reasoning is because he challenged Glenn Richardson for the job last year and got about a quarter of the House Republican Caucus to side with him, he should now be Speaker.

The problem is, he simply doesn’t have the influence right now to pull off that play. Too many members of the Caucus -specifically current Chairmen – are worried about keeping their jobs if he is Speaker. The thinking here is that he will have too many debts to repay, and may have to move sooner rather than later to repay them.
