Tom’s comments on Carlton Fletcher’s column

In today’s Albany Herald, Carlton Fletcher writes about an exchange with someone who is now a former friend. The reason for the split? A father finding out his son was gay, and that Carlton knew and held true to a promise to say nothing.

Good old Fletch did what any honest person would do. He kept his promise. Based on the father’s reaction, the son was right to ask for that promise too. Continue reading Tom’s comments on Carlton Fletcher’s column

DCTPA officially endorses Hart

The Dougherty County Taxpayers Association has officially thrown it’s lot behind former railroad executive Terry Hart in his bid for the Ward 5 City Commission seat currently held by Bob Langstaff. Last night, the DCTPA made it official, though it was a already a foregone conclusion that they would. Bob Langstaff is one seat they specifically targeted, and Hart is the only challenger.

We’ll find out how accurate Roger Marietta was when he allegedly referred to the group’s endorsement as “the kiss of death.” Continue reading DCTPA officially endorses Hart

Lee County Commission Meeting Sept 22, 2009

First, here is the official agenda for this meeting, as well as the agenda packet – the information the Commissioners had printed in front of them.

This week’s meeting actually had some decently interesting things happen, so let’s get into it, shall we?

You Know That Thing About Curiousity and Cats?

Let’s hope it doesn’t happen here!

I’m kinda curious, and this is completely for fun, so I’m wondering how many will actually do this:

Take two political quizzes, the World’s Smallest Political Quiz and the Political Spectrum Quiz, and post your results.

The World’s Smallest Political Quiz utilizes the Nolan Chart and truly is extremely small – 10 questions.

The Political Spectrum Quiz is just over 50 questions and uses a custom square chart, similar to the Nolan Chart but not quite. In this chart, liberal fascists are at the top left corner, with conservative libertarians in the bottom right.

I’ll take both of these and post my own results in the morning, what say y’all?

This is getting ridiculous

In any totalitarian regime, there are typically propaganda designed to convince people, particularly the young, in the greatness of their leader. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, they all had ‘em. It’s one of the truly disturbing trends of world history.

Unfortunately for us, Obama seems to have them too. Continue reading This is getting ridiculous

Deen ain’t to blame for fat kids

Albany’s favorite daughter, Paula Deen, has it all. A successful business, successful cookbooks, just success all around. Now, she can add a run in with Barbara Walters on the television program The View. The Atlanta Journal’s Peach Buzz has the details.

Walters wants to blame Paula Deen for contributing to childhood obesity? Yeah, right. Continue reading Deen ain’t to blame for fat kids

Lighthouses On a Stormy Sea

Governor Perdue said Tuesday that “The best of people comes out in times like this.”, and some stories are already coming out of people helping themselves and their neighbors deal with the Atlanta floods.

Take, for example, the story in one AJC picture of two men clearing out a house in the middle of the flood. Neither had met before that moment, but one man owned the house and the other had once considered buying it. In another picture, you see a kid chipping golf balls into the water, making the best of a bad situation. In another, you have two brothers on top of a mobile home trying to get in and salvage what they can – in the middle of flood waters that appear to be at least 3 feet deep. (These stories and their pics can be found here, and many more pics of the floods from the AJC can be found here.)

Also coming out are actual news accounts of neighbors helping neighbors. The most prominent I’ve seen so far is the story of Mercedes Bell, who by Weds had already stripped out most of her carpet and drywall with the help of a neighbor and her friends.

Individuals helping individuals. Families helping families. Friends helping friends. Neighbors helping neighbors.

THAT is the American Way. THAT is what makes this nation the best nation on earth.

The strength of this nation is NOT our government, but our people, and in times of catastrophe, that strength shines like a lighthouse on a stormy sea.

Healthcare Reform is a Trojan Horse

What has become of the healthcare debate in America? We really pounded our Congressmen and Senators during the August recess at the various town hall meetings and it all seemed to come to a head with the March on Washington on September 12. The question now becomes this. Have we taken a big enough step that our representatives will listen to us or are they simply waiting for us to quiet down so that they can proceed?

A source of mine in Washington says that the House is about to start working again on a healthcare proposal. “Which one,” I asked. There are about five up there now including the new Baucus Bill. My source says that the House will try to reconcile elements of all of the bills into one. This may add 200-1500 extra pages to the already monstrous bill, HB 3200. Once that is done, a new HB number will be issued. PatientsFirst has called for a national “Call Congress Day” on October 6, 2009. It looks like it is time to pick up the fight again folks, and October 6 could be too late. To take the field, a general once said, “Get there first with the most.”

Thinking outside the box

I’m a big fan of thinking outside the box. Conventional ideas on boosting the local economy not only bore me, but are just really unconvincing to me for the most part. The only type of conventional wisdom that I agree with is the need for manufacturing jobs, and those are hard to get. They’re not impossible, Honda just opened a factory here in Georgia for example, but they’re difficult.

So maybe the secret is to look outside the box. The purpose of this post is to see what the great minds who read the blog think, but I’ve got one idea all on my own. Continue reading Thinking outside the box

Ward 3 race cleared up…kinda

Yesterday, the Election board upheld the candidacy of both Arthur Williams and Christopher Pike. However, there was mention in the Albany Herald of Williams possibly appealing the decision regarding Pike. Pike called the challenge “grandstanding”, and he’s probably right.

Williams, on the other hand, was up to his old tricks. Continue reading Ward 3 race cleared up…kinda
