Ward 3 race cleared up…kinda

Yesterday, the Election board upheld the candidacy of both Arthur Williams and Christopher Pike. However, there was mention in the Albany Herald of Williams possibly appealing the decision regarding Pike. Pike called the challenge “grandstanding”, and he’s probably right.

Williams, on the other hand, was up to his old tricks. Continue reading Ward 3 race cleared up…kinda

Focus Is On Atlanta

For those that haven’t heard yet, Atlanta is flooding due to heavy rain fall over the past week, and it isn’t truly expected to die down until tomorrow. I lived in Bartow County for 23 years before moving to South GA, and I’ve never seen anything remotely close to the pictures I’m seeing coming out of there, particularly in the past 24 hours.

There are literally hundreds of roads closed, at least some of them completely washed out in places. Hundreds are trapped in their neighborhoods, and last I heard 6 were already dead – including a 3 yo whose trailer got swept into the river and broke apart. I’m now hearing reports that the shelter set up at the Cobb Civic Center has run out of soap, socks, towels, toothpaste, pampers, and feminine hygiene products. This is in addition to thousands without power, and at least 3 counties under boil water advisories.

My own family in Bartow appears to be safe for now, but my alma mater, Kennesaw State University, has also fallen victim to the floods, one of many area schools that closed down yesterday and will remain closed for at least another day or two. I also have many friends at my old church in northern Cherokee and Forsyth counties that are affected, though all appear to also be safe so far.

So for now, the focus is on Atlanta – for an entirely different reason than usual.

For up-to-date information on the Atlanta Flood, I’m using AJC.com‘s homepage as well as the twitter hashtag #atlflood

[UPDATE] Apparently, the flooding has even gotten close to SWGA, as I-75 was shut down just 30 miles north of Cordele in Houston County between exits 121 and 127.
