Folks, I suspect that the healthcare debate is not looking too good for the Democrats. They have reverted to the old cries of “racism” to shut up any debate on the issue. Suddenly you cannot oppose any part of the proposed bills because of their substance. Clearly the only reason anyone would oppose any part of the bill is because they are a racist, so sit down and shut up already. Not so fast my liberal friends!
Every time charges of racism are uttered, the sting becomes less and less. Wouldn’t you agree? Think of the times that claim was used to shakedown countless companies by Jackson and Sharpton in the 1980s and 90s. They built their careers from the racism business and companies would bend over backwards to prove that they were not guilty of such a social crime.
When Congressman Joe Wilson yelled, “You lie” during the President’s address, he was simply pointing out that the statement the President made did not jive with the bill that had come out of the House. I remember commenting on Tom’s post that much of what the President said was not true based the House bill so a new bill must be in the works.
Maureen Dowd says that Congressman Wilson said or at least implied, “You lie, boy!” Everybody that was watching the debate live knows that is not true. Wilson’s words, “You lie” may not have been proper decorum for Congress, but it was a statement that has opened up debate on the bill. The latest version of the healthcare bill requires ID cards for people to get benefits. Would that have happened without Congressman Wilson?
President Jimmy Carter has now come out of the small town of Plains, Georgia to agree that any opposition to government run healthcare can only be made by racists. In an article from CNN
Carter was quoted as saying
“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African-American,” Carter told “NBC Nightly News.” “I live in the South, and I’ve seen the South come a long way, and I’ve seen the rest of the country that shares the South’s attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans.”
To add even more glory to our state and race relations, Georgia Congressman Hank Johnson says that if Wilson isn’t rebuked, the KKK will ride through the countryside intimidating people. He went on to say that if he were a betting man, he would say that Wilson’s outburst instigated more racist sentiment, and that he guesses Americans can now expect folks putting on white hoods and white uniforms again and riding through the countryside intimidating people.
But it does not just stop with Congressman Joe Wilson. Reporter Brian Williams claimed that there were a “…certain number of signs and images at last weekend’s big tea party march on Washington and at other recent events have featured racial and other violent themes…”
So there you go. There is a full court press to cry racism in an effort to make the opposition shut up. Will it work this time? Does racism only apply to whites being prejudiced against blacks? If you think so, then I’d be interested in hearing how you explain Kanye West taking the microphone from Taylor Swift to sing the phrases of Beyonce, or Rev. Jeremiah Wright, or candidate Obama calling his grandmother a “typical white woman.” What about the recent footage of the black kids on the school bus beating up the white kid? That was ruled to not be racially motivated, but what do you conclude after you watch the footage?
Congressman Hank Johnson worries in regards to racism that, “…it’s okay. You don’t have bury it now. You can bring it out and talk about it fully.” That is EXACTLY what needs to occur! We do need to bring it out in the open and have an honest discussion about racism in America. That is the only way that the problem can be addresses properly. Who better to do this than the President of the United States of America? You know, the one that was elected because he had white support. I suspect that some of those same people were in Washington over the weekend protesting his policies and NOT his skin color. After all, the LA Times reported that Candidate Obama, “makes guilty whites feel good.” Wasn’t the racism racket supposed to end after we elected a black man to the highest office in the nation?
The latest charge of racism will surely backfire. The protesters know that it isn’t true and they won’t be scared away by lies that are meant to intimidate and silence them.
“Clearly the only reason anyone would oppose any part of the bill is because they are a racist, so sit down and shut up already”
Well that’s complete and utter falsehood.
As for the rest…meh. I’m just not that into tit-for-tat
I’m black and I DON’T THINK or BELIEVE all opponents to Healthcare or Obama in general are Racists. If you’ve read the plan and honestly don’t agree with it, then it’s your Right to disagree (how you or myself disagree should be up for discussion). Disagreeing with Obama based on Party stand is a Right as well (“It is Written” .. Political Parties shall not agree. Don’t know the chapter or verse, but I’m sure it’s in the Constitution and/r Bible somewhere, right?)
And since we’re all adults … We all know that Racism is Real and it Still Exists in the world today. If that’s your Reason. I say be a man or a woman and own it. Why be a Coward and not say that’s your reason. Everyone else is coming out of the closet, come on out, too.
Be we Black, White, Hispanic, etc., haters, lovers, includers, etc… we all have a common goal. We want what’s best for ourselves and those we love…… No one can make this a perfect world, but should we make it tolerable? I waver on that myself.
The Really sad issue is, we have so many opinions, but so few Solutions, suggestions or People willing to work together to come to a Solution, because we want to hold out and Get credit for having the solution, I guess. So we rattle pots and pans and make a lot of noise about the problem until there’s no one left to speak but us, and then everyone will know we have the answer. Just guessing folks.
I’m doing my part each and everyday. I’m raising my children to not see color, but YET live with the knowledge that there are those that do, and to refuse to allow any acts committed by others to define them, but make their own contribution. period.
I have insurance, and as far as I’m concerned, the system can remain as is, but there are others who aren’t so fortunate. Should we do anything for them?
There was a day before Blue Cross & Blue Shield, right? Should we go back? Every man for himself and God for us all? Pay our Doctors with money, chickens, eggs …I don’t know. ??
What is the Solution? I know someone out there has “a” answer, if not “the” answer.
Bill, in your examples of desperate baiters, you omitted the recent Albany Herald piece about AWMs.
As I stated in my earlier post regarding Healthcare, I was opposed to the concept when it was called socialized medicine. Now the term has morphed from “Single payer” to “public option” to “insurance coop” to “insurance exchange”. I was opposed to the government takeover of medicine when Kennedy was pushing it 20 years ago. Why must my opposition be silenced because a black president now tries to shove it down our throats?
The false accusations of “racism” will not back down the new emboldened American public as it did in the recent past. I have faith the public as a whole recognizes the dishonesty of this tactic.
Jackie,
I agree with you on so many levels. I think that people need to come together no matter the race. Yes, we all want what is best for ourselves and our loved ones first, but I think that there is enough compassion to worry also for those that simply cannot get any insurance.
By the way, I too raise my children to be color blind. The world would be a much better place if all the races first judged a man by the content of his character!
I have insurance, and as far as I’m concerned, the system can remain as is, but there are others who aren’t so fortunate. Should we do anything for them?
And that’s what really should be being discussed, IMHO. Instead of race even entering into the discussion, let’s talk about the issues and maybe we can come up with something.
I don’t think the system as it is works. But I don’t think the plans the democrats have proposed will solve the problems either.
My responce to someone that calls me a racist “That’s the best that you have? You just toss out the race card and hope that it stops the conversation… Not here, you have to do a lot better than that.” And then I laugh at them. The next move is on them and they don’t know how to respond!
I was just at a gas station in west Albany this morning and a car pulled up two pumps down from mine. There was a guest on their radio station (yes it was that loud) that was talking about how bad the racism is in this country and we are not in the “post racist era.” This has really been stirred up by the election of President Obama, the guest said. The host agreed and said that it is really bad in the south.
As I said in my post, Obama would never have been elected without the white vote.
I have never heard a radio station talk about how “whitie” must stand together to keep the black man down. The only voices that talk about race seem to be on the far left. Why is that? How can we truly become a color blind society if one side keeps bringing skin color into every equation?
I’ve disagreed with Carlton Fletcher’s past AWM article in the Albany Herald. To their credit, I also wanted to acknowledge today’s (9/17/09)Albany Herald editorial dealing with the flip side of that issue, and to thank the editorial staff.
Recycling President Obama’s words about Kanye West, Jimmy Carter is a grinning jackass. He needs to go live in a cave with Osama Bin Laden since he is one of Terrorist No. 1′s favorite authors.
Was I too blunt?
I wonder how another Tea Party in Plains, Georgia would go over now??
Probably pretty darn good if it’s timed right (saturday, non-holiday, etc.)
Count me in.
I live only about twenty miles from Jimmy — I’ll be there if you want to do it! I was very un-busy (is that a word?) at work yesterday and thought about how my time would have been so much better spent in Plains with a protest sign!
Sorry, I meant to say a braying jackass.
Am I the only one who thinks Kanye West’s actions at the music awards were racially motivated?
Charles posted: Am I the only one who thinks Kanye West’s actions at the music awards were racially motivated?
No Charles. There are at least two of us.
