Buzz Brockway and Erick Erickson over at Peach Pundit are saying that State Senator Eric Johnson has a “major announcement” tin about 45 min and that said announcement will be that he is resigning from the State Senate.
Honestly, I enjoyed watching the man on the floor of the Senate. I didn’t always agree with him, but I do enjoy watching him. He had some good ideas and some bad ones, but that is to be expected of pretty much anyone at that level, and I’ sure even the Libertarians we eventually get in the General Assembly will have a brain fart or two every year.
That said, I can completely understand and appreciate the strategy here. GA law states that no elected official can raise money while the General Assembly is in session – but puts no such restrictions on federal office holders or private citizens. Thus, if Johnson remains in the State Senate, come January he is put on a 3 month hold on fundraising, while two of his direct competitors – Deal and McBerry – are not, nor are two of his Democratic competitors – Barnes and Poythress.
Considering how neck and neck Deal and Johnson were in fundraising on the last disclosure reports, this makes perfect strategic sense for him, and I genuinely applaud the move from that angle.
Now, about that District 1 special election that it looks like we’re about to have… anyone know any Libertarians in Savannah?
