At least one of us is running

It’s easy to be critical of goverment. Let’s be honest, there’s generally a lot to be critical of. However, both Jeff and myself are about more than that. We could just write and complain and probably do very well with that. But anyone can do that. Instead, we want meaningful changes and this blog is only one aspect of that desire.

While I announced this morning that I will not be running, Jeff made no such announcement.

Instead, we get this little tidbit in the Albany Herald today. Yes, that’s right. Jeff is running for the Leesburg City Council, sucker that he is. This has been a pretty recent decision by Jeff (like yesterday), but one that I wish him the best with.

More details to follow.

Astroturf? Or true Grassroots?

Picture this:

An organization developed with support, guidance, and direction by prominent members of one particular political party with an intent to drive policy discussions by organizing people to agitate for the desired change. They are well financed and supported by party leadership.

Yes, FreedomWorks has been labeled as an AstroTurf organization for some time now. As one of the driving forces behind citizen efforts to block health care and cap and trade, it is one of the prime groups that has helped label the entire anti-healthcare bill effort as “AstroTurf”.

Unfortunately, in the first paragraph, I wasn’t talking about FreedomWorks. Continue reading Astroturf? Or true Grassroots?

Wildcats future in jeopardy

The Wildcats were a done deal. The City Commission finally approved a contract, and they were ready to go. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted. Continue reading Wildcats future in jeopardy

Leesburg City Council Meeting Last Night

At the Leesburg City Council meeting last night, storm water and drainage was the clear big issue.

Two residents complained of the ditches and holding ponds around their properties being filled with a 3 inch rain, and asked the City to check into clearing them and possibly deepening the holding ponds.

On a related note, the engineering firm the City uses was cleared to issue the contracts and begin work on fixing the sinkhole on Society Ave that formed during April’s torrential rains. It is expected that the contract signing phase will take two weeks, and with good weather the actual construction will also take two weeks, meaning the road should be fixed in a month or so.

Also discussed was a resident’s complaint of a cropduster flying too close to her house and what could be done about it.

Finally, the scheduled date of the next meeting was October 6 – the night of the Luke Bryan album release party at Lee County High. Due to this conflict, the Council postponed the meeting 48 hours, and rescheduled it for October 8 at 7pm.

Ward 5 Race

Many of you, between here or the Albany Journal, know that I have been considering a run for the Ward 5 City Commission seat currently being held by Bob Langstaff. I personally believe that I can do a lot for the City of Albany, and I believe that the direction we’ve been going in for the past two decades is obviously not working.

However, I regret that I will be unable to run at this time. Continue reading Ward 5 Race

Tuesday, September 1, 2009, two opposing groups met face to face outside of Congressman Sanford Bishop’s office. One group appeared to be well funded. They carried premade signs and were fairly dressed well. The other group brought homemade signs and showed up, for the most part, in t shirts and ball caps. The groups drew about the same amount of people, but the difference was stark.

Ken King, a regional field director for Organizing For America-a group connected to President Obama, held up thousands of signatures that he said were gathered from people around the district. Most of the ones who attended their rally carried signs that read, “Thank You” and “Standing Together For Health Insurance Reform.” A podium was set up where people could talk about their recent experiences with the health care system. One such person was quoted as saying, “One group of people who enjoy the benefit of adequate healthcare have the audacity to deny millions of people the right to have it when America can afford to provide it.” Perhaps he has not checked the US Debt Clock. It even appeared that Organizing For America had hired “Video It” to professionally document their well orchestrated rally.
