Finally

After two bogus ‘petitions’ being used as a campaign ploy to get more data in campaign databases (by Karen Handel and John Oxendine), I finally get an email that is both a fundraising email AND a campaign database scheme – but doesn’t involve some ‘petition’ whose actual statement you never see.

This one comes from State Senator Eric Johnson (R-Savannah), who was the second highest fundraiser in the first half of this year, behind only Nathan Deal, and who I interviewed for this site back in June.

It is a ‘birthday card’ for the Senator’s 56th birthday this Thursday, and let me go ahead and say ‘Happy Birthday, Eric!’. The email also asks for some variation of 56 – such as $5.60, $56, or $560.

I’ll begrudgingly admit that any of these three tactics are politically smart moves, but I thank Senator Johnson for using something OTHER than a bogus ‘petition’, and as a token of my gratitude I’ll give him my own version of a gift: I’ll post his email here, with working links.

Oh, and an early ‘Happy Anniversary!’ to the Johnsons as well, as they will be celebrating 34 years of marriage next week.

GBI expands investigation

Dougherty County DA has apparently asked the GBI to investigate facade grants issued by ousted ADICA CEO and downtown manager Don Buie. In particular, the Lajuanna Woods grant will get a good, long look from the GBI.

More as this story develops.

Let’s put some money where our mouths are

Following the parable of Davy Crocket that Jeff posted about yesterday, I thought a bit about it and realized that perhaps I’ve been to harsh when it comes to downtown development. After all, there are plenty who think it’s essential we have a thriving downtown. While I don’t know that I agree, I do know that a booming downtown would be great. Since so many of our commissioners and ADICA board members are true believers, let’s get something done.

I’m putting up $100 of my own money. It’s not much, but it’s the most I can afford. I’m challenging every proponent in government of downtown redevelopment to step up and match my pledge. Obviously, many are capable of giving much, much more. I urge them to step up and give more. The purpose, to form a non-profit dedicated to redeveloping downtown. Bishop Town Hall Staged?

SWGA Politics just received an anonymous tip from someone connected to the Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia that said Bishop’s town hall, scheduled there on Wednesday 8/19, will be staged. Only 200 people will be admitted and he is reportedly bringing in his own people. The source does not know how they will be arriving, but who gets in will be controlled. The hours for the town hall are from 8:30 and 10:30am.

We at SWGA Politics like to verify our information. This particular bit of information was received from only one source and thus should be treated as a rumor rather than absolute fact. If anyone else can verify that this is true, I would appreciate hearing from you. This may also serve as a “heads up” for those that had hoped to have their voices heard at the Columbus event.

Picking up the pieces

In the aftermath of Don Buie, Albany has been torn asunder. Some in office blame the media. Others blame Don Buie, Willie Adams, and Al Lott. Yeah, I’m in that second group. But the fact of the matter is that…it doesn’t matter. Who’s at fault is pretty irrelevant at this point. The GBI is conducting their investigation. Until that is completed and we see what’s what, anything regarding that is pure speculation.

So what do we do next? Continue reading Picking up the pieces
