Boycotts: Good or bad?

The year was 2003.  The United States was gearing up to invade Iraq.  Battle lines were being drawn, including in the entertainment industry.  A girl band, at the top of their genre, made a statement against war at a concert in England that started a firestorm against them.  They were against the war, which was hardly controversial in and of itself.  But the band was the Dixie Chicks, and the genre was the favorite of many conservative, Country music.

Boycotts were quickly called for, and radio stations voluntarily pulled their music from rotation.  The liberals in the media called it “blacklisting” and “censorship”, despite the fact that it was all voluntary.  Today, they’re doing the same thing to Whole Foods.
