Bishop Protest on Friday

The month of August will offer many opportunities for protesting the legislators that favor representing special interests rather than constituents. It has already been mentioned on SWGA Politics that there are many dates to protest Congressman Sanford Bishop.

Friday, August 14, 2009, a group of citizens plan to gather in front of Bishop’s office from 12noon until 1pm. This is just a reminder of that.

I spoke with a friend today during the school’s open house. He expressed his disappointment with the Saxby Chambliss meeting and then mentioned that Bishop has a town hall meeting scheduled at ASU. He wasn’t sure that he could attend that one. If you cannot attend all of Bishop’s functions, at least plan to attend a few. He is here to listen to the people. It is time to stand up.

State Representative Wants to Execute Private Businessmen

State Rep Tommy Benton is one of 180 members of the Georgia House of Representatives, and honestly even with the tracking I do of the General Assembly, he’s probably not a guy I would normally have heard of. He’s in the middle of his third term, and he’s the Secretary of the Education and Retirement committees, but otherwise there is nothing that stands out about him from a casual glance at his House profile.

And then I got a press release with the full text of an email he sent that says (emphasis mine)

Dillon, Thanks for the email. We will have to agree to disagree on this and whether or not money is wasted. I am opposed to the legalization of marijuana. I think we should go to caning for people caught using and maybe execute dealers. That would solve the problem as well. That is what they do in Singapore and they don’t have a drug problem, but then they have less liberty than we do here. Tommy Benton / HD31

I don’t have a problem with the guy being opposed to legalization per se, it is his opinion and he is entitled to it. Admittedly, it is also a fairly popular opinion in this state, and even though I disagree with it, I’m willing to let that disagreement slide for the moment.

My problem comes from the idea that Rep Benton apparently thinks it is OK to torture people who have hurt no one other than themselves and execute people who have done nothing more than peacefully sell a product to a willing buyer. Should we now ban alcohol and tobacco – products that have been shown to be FAR more dangerous than marijuana – and cane anyone caught using them? Should we put every bartender in this state on Death Row for allowing people to get a buzz at the local watering hole?

Prisons are already overcrowded, and this Rep wants to ADD to the prison population? How does he plan to address the ADDITIONAL overcrowding at the jails? By releasing actual violent felons into our communities?

The State is already having to make massive budget cuts, and Benton wants to INCREASE the amount of money the Department of Corrections is having to spend? Georgia is a balanced budget state, and education is 55% of the State budget. Would Benton furlough teachers even longer – or even increase class sizes/cut teacher positions – just so these private businessmen could rot on death row?

Closing, here’s the letter that sparked Rep Benton’s tirade:

Points to Remember About Healthcare Town Halls

At a recent townhall meeting in South Carolina, one man told Congressman Bob Ingliss to “keep his government hands off of his medicare.” Further, news of some racist graffiti in Georgia at Congressman David Scott’s office gave Statists cause to doubt the credibility of healthcare reform opposition. In this trying time in our nation’s legislative decisions, we, as lovers of liberty, must stay on point. We must not fool others into thinking that these exceptions are a part of the status quo. Staying on point at Town Hall Meetings, blogs and other forms of social networking are essential to achieving the health care reforms that we want. Here are a few things to understand:

Saxby Chambliss Doesn’t Want To Talk To You About Healthcare

In a recent article at SWGA Politics, we read how Sanford Bishop doesn’t want to talk to you about healthcare.

That is why the town halls are scheduled when and where they are. I have come to the realization that Senator Saxby Chambliss does not want to hear from you either. At least Bishop has released the time and place for his events well in advance. That is not the case with Chambliss.

Mayor Adams: Professional comedian?

Albany Mayor Willie Adams is apparently looking at a new profession: Comedian. You see, his recent guest editorial to the Albany Herald is frankly hysterical. If he’s not looking at comedy as a new career, he should. It looks like he’s better cut out for it than to serve as mayor. Continue reading Mayor Adams: Professional comedian?

Georgia Teen Republicans vs Free Speech

Over the past week, Georgia Teen Republicans and their Chairman, Trey O’Callaghan, have done one good thing: They’ve gotten themselves a pretty fair amount of press, via what GriftDrift is calling ‘ConstableGate‘.

Now, that particular story has already been covered fairly extensively, and on this site alone you can find articles here and here.

But I want to look for a moment at another peculiarity of the fallout from that scandal. You see, one of Trey’s assertions was that the Executive Board members could not endorse or denigrate any particular candidate, that they had to be strictly neutral – at least publicly. Apparently, this is written in their Constitution.
