I met with State Rep Mike Keown (R-Coolidge) today for lunch over at Riverfront BBQ (great food at a decently cheap price, btw) to discuss the 2nd District race and other issues, basically just to get a chance to meet him and for him to meet me.
The vast majority of that conversation was off the record, but I can tell you this:
He told me that he sent in the paperwork to DC to officially challenge Sanford Bishop in next year’s election and apparently, Don Cole has agreed to become his campaign manager.
Once this is official, it will make Rep Keown the ONLY official challenger to Bishop at this point.
You see, while Lee Ferrell CLAIMS to be running a campaign against Bishop, apparently the Federal Elections Commission knows nothing about it. Since Ferrell has apparently been campaigning since April, when he ‘announced his candidacy to southwest georgia politics‘, the FEC not knowing about it – particularly if he has accepted campaign contributions – would be a violation of federal elections law, if I understand it correctly.
That said, we here at SWGAPolitics.com definitely would prefer a GOP Primary, and to that extent we encourage Ferrell to officially file ASAP.

I don’t believe that Mike Keown is the right candidate to defeat Bishop. I still think Don Cole is the best guy to do it, but it’s looking as if that’s not going to happen. You can read my opinion on this whole thing here:

Also, I still won’t support Ferrell for Congress. That’s definitely not going to happen.

I don’t know Mike but I’d like to meet him. Someone ought to invite him to the Lee County Republican monthly breakfast meeting this Saturday 8/8/09 at 8:30 am at Meatslangers BBQ on Hwy 19.
