Over the last six months, there has been a drastic increase in firearm purchases. Gun enthusiasts can also tell you about the increase in ammo sales as well, ammunition leaving the store almost as fast as it gets there. And, since gun control groups will be the first to tell you that the only way to get rid of crime is to get rid of guns, I’d love to hear them explain this report from the Washington Post.
It seems, in a post Heller vs District of Columbia world, with more guns on the street, violent crime rates are dropping in Washington, DC.
I’ve argued for years that an increase in guns has a tendency to cause a decrease in crime, and the inverse is true as well. I’ve mentioned London’s increase in violent crime after their total gun ban went into effect, and now DC’s drop in violent crime shows this as well. In addition, many other cities are experiencing a similar decrease in violent crime which corresponds to more guns on the street as well.
Now, I understand that correlation doesn’t equal causation, but it does put the lie to the arguements against private gun ownership from the left. Police in the District argue that the decrease in crime is a result of new techniques and procedures, and that may well be a contributing factor, but is it by itself? In my opinion, absolutely not.
Keep this data in mind the next time someone argues the need to strip us of our sacred right to keep and bear arms in an effort to curb crime. GeorgiaCarry.Org has argued that guns save lives for some time, and these numbers seem to help support that assertion. You should too!
True story: When I worked on the Hill, the Farm Bureau had an annual reception on the Senate side with food from the Varsity in Atlanta—everybody tried to be friends with Georgians that week. The eatery would truck the food up overnight and during a traffic stop the police got the driver for having a handgun in D.C. My man from the A.T.L. was not trying to be in D.C. without his heat.
Smart congressmen and senators know that until the handgun ban in D.C. is changed long guns are still permitted. “Back up a little, so I can shoot you” was one line while “Kill them all and let God sort them out” was the other. Maybe I wasn’t the best staffer on the Hill when it came to the fancy stuff but for five years in three offices I took every phone call and meeting as the Judiciary staffer..i.e. Abortion, Second Amendment, Prayer in School, Flag Burning. “….thank you for calling…my name…my name is Un….Unimportant.” I was going to tell those people my name so they could mess with my family in Georgia and find out what a private arsenal really is.

I wince when a knee-jerk piece of legislation is proposed in reaction to a shooting. This does nothing but continually disarm law-abiders and advertise gun-free zones like college campuses (i.e. Virginia Tech), where a kook can walk about at will and shoot the unarmed.
Gun restrictions come close to being the ultimate in government control and interference. The right and duty of every adult is to protect themselves and their families. This was not created but was recognized by our Constitutional forefathers. By what rights do bureaucrats take away your ability to provide a secure home for your family?
Ask the Brits how well its working for them. The folks in London are deeply and publicly regretting the ban to little avail. Gun crimes have gone up astronomically in London in the 10 years of the handgun ban. Don’t get me started, I can get wound up on 2A issues.
Remember – when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
When the people fear the government – there is tyranny. When the government fears the people – there is liberty.
Slyram: After the Heller decision, handguns are actually allowed in the District, though DC still limits the hell out of them.
Cartman: I agree with you completely. Gun control hasn’t been proven to do a damn thing except disarm the law abiding. Criminals, by definition, have no regard for the law.
I like to ask gun activists if they can imagine a criminal saying “I would rob and rape this person with a gun, but that’s illegal so I’ll use a knife instead”? I mean, it’s idiotic to imagine that criminals will obey gun laws since they already break so many others.
Gun control laws, while I personally believe they are good intentioned, are nothing more than a way to turn citizens into subjects. I honestly believe that many advocates for gun control truly believe that gun control will save lives, but it’s imperative that we who value our 2A rights show how those laws actually kill people.
