Public Evidence Against Buie Mounts

Like a soap opera, more is revealed in the saga of Don Buie and the GBI investigation. WALB reported yesterday evening that the investigation was sparked by Phil Cannon and is based on the now recanted affidavit by Nicole Brown. The report also revealed that Ms Brown has filed a complaint with the bar. ADICA attorney Jay Reynolds told WALB that there are a lot of “inconsistencies” but that was why the GBI was there to investigate.

So far, what’s been revealed doesn’t look so good for Buie.

What we know is that Brown received a total of five checks, adding up to $3500. That averages out to only $500 a check, though the $2000 check seems to be established (I have to assume that since WALB makes no mention of it’s lacking in the checks to Brown). If you remove that $2000 check, pay outs to Brown only average $375. Why is this important? Brown was a contract employee. There has to be a good reason to pay out $2000 to someone who was normally only paid closer to the $400 she claims she kept from the larger check.

In addition, there’s now questions about the recanting of the affidavit. For starters, Mr. Cannon’s assistant apparently verifies that Brown made corrections, which were then fixed and apparently spent somewhere in the neighborhood of half an hour with the affidavit before signing it. If she didn’t read it, that sounds like her fault. Frankly, I see it as her fault regardless. Everyone knows you don’t sign things you didn’t read, especially when lawyers are involved.

Things aren’t looking good for Buie from where I sit, though admittedly I’m predisposed against most of the stuff dealing with downtown. However, this isn’t how I want it to go down. No matter how I slice it though, this just doesn’t look good. Of course, it’s also not a done deal. It all matters to the answers to these questions:

  • Why was Ms Brown paid a check for $2000 when she averaged significanly less.
  • Is there any record anywhere of a $1600 transfer to Buie’s estranged wife?
  • What reason would Ms Brown have for spending half an hour with an affidavit that she signed, but now says was manipulated by attorney Phil Cannon?
  • What reasons would Phil Cannon have for framing Don Buie?
  • Who shot J.R. Ewing?

OK…maybe not the last one so much, but the rest are questions that need answering.  Personally, I don’t know any of the people involved in this in any way, so I can’t even speculate just now what those answers might be.  OK, I can, but who knows how accurate it might be.

Needless to say, this story will bear close scrutiny as it has bearing on so much of our local government.  So buckle up boys and girls.  I have a feeling that this is going to be a wild ride!
