Tomorrow at noon, in front of the courthouse in Albany, Ken Hodges will be kicking his campaign for Attorney General into gear. Hodges served as Dougherty County District Attorney for years prior to stepping down to re-enter private practice. Of course, that’s wasn’t for long, as this was apparently the prize he had his mind set on.
Of course, we’ve covered Hodges’ legal troubles. We’ve gotten plenty of comments on Hodges, most of them are not from supporters either.
Here as SWGA Politics, we try to be fair though. I have contacted Hodges campaign and requested an interview. The response was that right now they’re focusing on fund raising, which is fine. I hope to get Hodges’ comments on these subjects soon, though I doubt he can comment on the lawsuit with Charles Rehberg due the lawsuit still pending.
Still, if anyone is a supporter of Hodges, you’ll know where to find him tomorrow. Not many statewide campaigns kick off here in the Good Life City, so even if you’re not a supporter, it might be worth the time to go and check it out.
[UPDATE] We received the information about this event from an email that specifically said ‘Ken Hodges will be kicking off his campaign for Attorney General’.
HOWEVER, we have gotten the following email from the Hodges campaign:
Just wanted to let you guys know that tomorrow is not our official kick off. It is simply a hometown rally thrown to show Ken’s deep roots.
I would appreciate a correction on your blog, thanks so much!
Take each of those however you will.
[Additional Update]
The following is a press release we received from Ken Hodges campaign
Albany, GA– Supporters for Ken Hodges (D), candidate for Attorney General, will gather at 12:00 p.m. noon, Tuesday, June 23, 2009 on the steps of the Dougherty County Courthouse on Pine Avenue to cheer on the former Dougherty District Attorney and Albany native son as he seeks to be Georgia’s next Attorney General.
State Senator Freddie Powell Sims (D-Albany) will be offering her remarks, as well as the former Dougherty County Commissioner George Brown standing alongside the current Chairman, Jeff “Bodine”Sinyard
and with the support of Albany Mayor Willie Adams. Other community
leaders will be on hand as well as two victims testifying to Hodges’ compassion, leadership and commitment to justice both in and out of the courtroom.
Hodges enjoyed widespread popularity during his tenure as District Attorney and tomorrow’s rally for Hodges’ Attorney General campaign is
expected to attract many supporters. Hodges was elected by wide
margins in two contested races, and ran once unopposed, serving three terms as District Attorney from January 1997 until October 2008.
Is Ole Ken running on the Masochist party ticket? Or, is he perhaps just “uber arrogant”? No matter which, I am surprised he would even consider it in light of the Rehberg lawsuit.
I think what has already come out on the Phoebe Factoid matter sets the stage for, at the least, major embarrassment for Hodges. I do not doubt that Rehberg will win his suit and that his claims of malfeasance of office by Hodges will be upheld.
In America, one is presumed innocent until proven guilty. But, like the guy caught on video robbing the bank, the presumption of innocence is difficult in this case. If Hodges is innocent, why not let the trial proceed without delay?
I don’t see Hodges’ candidacy as a plus for the Good Life City. Rather, it is more how Rod Blagovjevich’s hometown might feel if he decided to run for another office.
It will be interesting to see what the media will do with his candidacy. Who knows, if the “big money” shows up and the media gives him a “get out of jail free” card, he might be the new AG. After all, the media put Obama in with great ease!
