    Happy Birthday Slyram!

  • Fellows, that was cool of you. I feel guilt-ridden for blowing off the computer yesterday so I could watch Lefty and Tiger fall apart at Beth Page Black, and Roger and Serena from London. A blog free birthday and I miss this comment until today. Thanks.

Here’s a quasi-political birthday story. When I was working for Rep. Sanford Bishop, someone in the office bought me a cheap cake for my birthday—which did not upset me because I never had a birthday party in my life…too cool for that. The House Office Buildings had elevator operators to clear the public out of the elevators when the bells rang for members to go to the chamber to vote. About a month after my birthday, I see a nice catered food spread on the office conference table and was told that it was one of the elevator ladies birthday. Okay, I get a five dollar cake and this lady gets a $100 delivery from the church on Georgia Avenue that runs a soul food restaurant in the basement as part of their community outreach (giving the poor people in the area job opportunities.)

That birthday lunch meant a lot to that older woman from the elevator but she meant a lot to the south Georgia because members of congress who were planning to sneak attack the peanut program in amendments during the appropriations funding bill would get on the elevator and talk about the plans as if she did not understand what was up. Of course, she would tell Bishop because he was always nice and respectful to her. When the attack came late at night, peanut program supporters were ready. The right “intel” at the right time is vital. With the right intel, the Civil War should have been over much earlier and with the right intel the current Georgia congressional delegation might be shaken up.
