[UPDATED] Rome News-Tribune: Karen Handel a Conspiracy Theorist [ March 9, 2010 – 2:01 pm] by Jeff Posted in » 2010 Campaigns

I knew about this issue from twitter, but admittedly I’m a bit late on getting all the details. But trust the boys from Peach Pundit to avoid this one like the plague – it makes their girl look like… well, a paranoid conspiracy theorist.

Here’s what has happened:

Apparently, John Oxendine told the Rome Chamber of Commerce that he “fully supports” a highway most people here in South Ga have never heard of and probably never would hear of, but is a major agenda item of this group. It is the proposed “411 Connector” that basically extends US 411 from US 41 to connect to I-75 at Ga-20. (Roughly 5-10 miles or so across northern Cartersville.) Ox said “I am going to build that road if I am elected governor”. (Which brings up an interesting side question: How is Ox going to have time to personally build a road if he is trying to manage a State and go on fancy hunting and awards show trips every year?)

About a week later -and timed to coincide with a major ad campaign against this road from a maxed-out contributor to her campaign – Karen Handel questioned this road’s value and route, in language very similar to the ad from the major contributor.

Much has been said about the conflict between Lynn Westmoreland and John Oxendine, but this issue is showing some fracture lines between US Rep Phil Gingrey and Karen, with Gingrey telling the Rome News-Tribune this:

Sound Familiar?[ June 20, 2009 – 10:10 pm]by Jeff Posted in » Editorial

Another cause was the fact that First Leader fought many wars, bringing the nation to the verge of bankruptcy, and Second Leader supported the dissidents during another country’s Revolution, exacerbating the precarious financial condition of the government. The national debt amounted to almost two billion [dollars, this was from a long time ago]. The social burdens caused by war included the huge war debt, made worse by the leadership’s military failures and ineptitude, and the lack of social services for war veterans. The inefficient and antiquated financial system was unable to manage the national debt, something which was both caused and exacerbated by the burden of a grossly inequitable system of taxation. Another cause was the continued conspicuous consumption of the rich, especially the [White House and Congressional leadership], despite the financial burden on the populace. High unemployment and high bread prices caused more money to be spent on food and less in other areas of the economy. There was too little internal trade and too many customs barriers.

Is It Apathy?[ June 20, 2009 – 3:00 pm]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

This past week, the Dougherty County School Board held a meeting regarding their budget. This is a budget that many people express displeasure over the size of. However, no one showed up at the meeting. In it’s editorial, the Albany Herald seems to think of it as apathy, but is it? Read More …

He’s Just Now Learning About These?[ June 20, 2009 – 12:00 pm]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

Albany mayoral candidate Kirk Smith has apparently just stumbled upon a massive conspiracy to defraud Americans of money. In fact, he told WALB that he’s investigated it himself by playing along until they eventually demanded $5,000. Apparently, the initial email claimed to be from the South African government and would give him $9 million for his help in getting $30 million out of the country.

I’m glad he’s just “investigated” something that most of the internet world has dealt with for years. The infamous 419 scam. Read More …

Why It’s Difficult To Compete With The Government[ June 20, 2009 – 8:00 am]by Tom Posted in » National

With the health care debate so fresh in our minds, and with the recent nationalization of General Motors, there’s been a lot to think about in regards to how a private entity can compete with Uncle Sam.  The President keeps saying that his health insurance reform plan won’t muscle out private insurance, but simply provide coverage for those who don’t currently have it.  Now, unlike many of President Obama’s opponents, I actually believe that this is his intent.  I really think he’s trying to just “fill in the gaps” in our current system.

It’s just a damn shame that it’s almost impossible to compete with Uncle Sam in any business field. Read More …
