Proms and Lesbians In the Bible Belt [ March 12, 2010 – 1:14 pm] by Jeff Posted in » General

I don’t know if y’all have seen this one, but over the past couple of days a story has come out about a certain high school senior in Mississippi. Seems this student likes to date girls and wants to wear a tux to prom.

The problem? The student’s name is Constance rather than Conrad.

Yes, Constance is a lesbian, and rather than just showing up at her prom wearing a tux with her girlfriend on her arm, she checked with the school to make sure she would be allowed to attend when she did. (There is a bit of debate over what she should have done here, and I’ve heard from both sides. Personally, I think she probably did the smart thing at this point in the story.)

The school refused, and when she threatened a lawsuit, the school cancelled prom altogether.

What Should President Obama do about the Iran Election ‘crisis’?[ June 17, 2009 – 6:31 pm]by Jeff Posted in » National

As usual, Cato has some spot-on commentary here, the crux of it being this:

If Iran’s government has overreached, the right response is schadenfreude. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer group of guys. Meanwhile, President Obama has a full plate of problems to deal with in his own country. Whatever government emerges from the Iranian political process, we’re going to have to deal with it. Until then, whatever President Obama’s personal prayers or wishes are for Iran, he ought to keep them to himself.

I’ve pretty well made a jerk of myself recently on Twitter and Facebook with my opposition to the hysteria over this supposed ‘crisis’, and I’m not about to repeat that mistake, at least not on the same issue and not so soon.

But seriously, that Cato piece is decently short – 3 paragraphs, one of which was posted above – and well worth the read.

City Funded Shooting Range?[ June 17, 2009 – 12:00 pm]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

Late yesterday, shots rang out at the Carver Pool. If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because of the whole mess involving the funding for this very same pool. A recent article in the Albany Journal points out that based on the cost of operating the pool annually and the average number of kids who use it each day, it costs around $60 per kid per day to run the pool. Now, it’s serving as a shooting range for gangbangers here in Albany. Read More …

More Sign Ordinance Coverage[ June 17, 2009 – 8:00 am]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

The sign ordinance has definitely been one of the hot stories in Albany, with plenty of people weighing in including us here at SWGA Politics. Well, yet more momentum can be found in this WFXL report (It is the video link. Text is here, though it’s not the full text of the video.) And folks, yours truly and this blog are in the story.

All over town, more and more people are expressing outrage over this law, but City Manager Al Lott does bring up a good point. That is, the laws most are getting hit with have been in place for almost 20 years, it’s just that Code Enforcement didn’t have the personnel that they do now to actually enforce it. Read More …

Funding The Military Plus A Few Other Goodies…[ June 17, 2009 – 1:12 am]by Bill Waller Posted in » National

A friend of mine wanted me to check out HB 2346 and urge my Senators and Congressman to vote against it because it has some funding appropriated for the International Monetary Fund (IMF.) Before I sent it out to all of my contacts, I thought I would check out the bill for myself.
