I give it two thumbs up!
I read that column this morning and it was a real eye opener. My mind when to the stories about prohibition actually creating the big mob and the fact that fatty foods kill more people than alcohol and drugs. But, I don’t sell legalizing pot because people would be able to grow their own and the federal government won’t get it’s tax revenue—spoken like a true tax and spend Democrat.

I’m going to take that as a two thumbs up for Carlton’s article and not for me shutting up for once, Jim.
Actually, it’s not that different from people brewing their own beer or making homemade wine. One person is allowed something like 200 gallons of beer per year, which there’s really very little way to enforce, but they still get plenty of tax revenue off of alcohol sale
See? Even tax and spend Democrats can find something to love
Carlton – well done..just one thing missing….
As a retired police officer and 1969 graduate of Dougherty High School, I heartily endorse the analysis of Carlton Fletcher, as he pointed out the many advantages to repealing marijuana prohibition. The one major advantage of going legal/regulated/taxed Fletcher did leave out; namely that public safety would increase. My colleagues currently spend a solid 10 million hours to arrest about 850,000 citizens for marijuana, 90% for possession with intent to smoke. This horrific waste of police time translates into less time for the deadly DUI and child predator.
If one day you have a drug problem, see a doctor for goodness sake. Police officers have more important tasks.

The War on Drugs is the most destructive, dysfunctional & immoral domestic policy since slavery and Jim Crow.
Officer Wooldridge, I’d like to take a moment to thank you for your comments. I’m the son of a retired APD officer myself, and know from my time with my father how many arrests are simply people who want to recreate with something that creates zero impact on the community as a whole. Those who have served in law enforcement are often the best advocates for legalization out there. From Jeff, myself, or Carlton Fletcher, it’s just people on the streets who “don’t understand” (as many proponents of prohibition claim). You, on the other hand, should know better than most of them what’s really what.
Thanks again for your comments, and for your efforts in regards to personal liberty!
Fletcher’s reference to Neil Young’s Southern Man reminds me that Lynard Skynard’s Sweet Home Alabama was in part a response to Young’s song. After the line “in Birmingham they love the governor,” did you catch the background singers saying “Bo Bo Bo.” I always wondered what was what with “We heard Mr. Young sing about her, we heard on Neil put her down.” Who would have thought that Governor Wallace would win his last elections will overwhelming Black support and he would be friends with Rev. Jesse Jackson.
I am not touching the reparations debate other than to say the preoccupation some people have with all things Civil War keeps the discussion going. The Confederacy did more to end America than anything since Cornwallis surrendered; that includes the War of 1812 and the current War on Terrorism. Some folks have been fighting the war on domestic terrorism since they came to these shores in the hull of ships. Finally, acknowledging the will of the South’s army or Lee’s skills as a field marshall is not condoning their cause.
