Phoebe violates it’s own charter [ March 13, 2010 – 7:56 am] by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

The Albany Herald reports this morning of Margurete Burns, an 81 year old Albany woman, who suffered a head injury back in February. After being initially treated in Douglasville, Burns returned home. The next day, she got a phone call telling her to get medical treatment immediately. So, she went to Palmyra. The ER doctor apparently felt she needed a neurosurgeon, so he contacted Phoebe. They allegedly refused to take her, so she was airlifted to Macon.

Now, let’s ignore the fact that there are laws stating that hospitals can’t refuse to treat people, and go right to Phoebe’s own charter. Read More …

Ron Paul Is Wrong[ June 12, 2009 – 6:30 pm]by Jeff Posted in » Editorial, National

HR 1207 in the US Congress is Ron Paul’s ‘Audit the Fed’ initiative that has had conservatives, libertarians, and many other groups buzzing for a few months now.

The Fed is a private organization – which the supporters of the Audit the Fed initiative are among the first to point out. This private organization has been granted vast powers and basically dictates US monetary policy.

I agree that the Fed shouldn’t have these powers, that isn’t where Dr. Paul is wrong.
[So where is Dr. Paul wrong?

A New Sign Ordinance[ June 12, 2009 – 3:00 pm]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County, Editorial

Commissioner Langstaff asked what was the minimum that a sign ordinance could do that would still achieve the stated goal of not deterring business (I sincerely doubt it would do a thing to attract business, but I’ll concede the possibility it may deter). Now, this is hardly an easy task, since what I think is acceptable is hardly going to be universal. That said, I’m still going to pose my own plan for a new sign ordinance. However, and hopefully more realistically, I’m also going to propose a couple of changes that may make the current ordinance a little easier for local businesses to deal with.

“Enforcing” the Peace[ June 12, 2009 – 12:00 pm]by Tom Posted in » National

A couple of days ago, a comment was made on a post that Bill wrote about being a “citizen of the world“.  That comment was made by a gentleman who apparently is a strong advocate for what many call a one world government.  I, of course, responded.  However, I can’t help be feel like there is more to be said, particularly in regards to the following statement:

With a globally enforced peace, we can actually defeat AIDS and poverty, get serious about everyone’s human rights, deal with climate change, encourage freedom and democracy everywhere, and build a truly sustainable future for our planet.

Success In The Good Life City[ June 12, 2009 – 8:00 am]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

Albany likes to bill itself as the Good Life City, but that name hasn’t been applicable in quite some time. With crime and a poor economy, a name like the Good Life City is sort of like calling a bald guy “Curly” or a big guy “Tiny”. However, amidst all the chaos and turmoil that is this city, there is one man who seems to thrive in this town in spite of everything else. He walks into Harvest Moon with a swagger and confidence that came from many years on a stage, playing music for a living. He moves around the place like it’s not a restaurant, but his own private party and everyone is invited. It’s like its Bo Henry’s world. We’re just living in it. Read More …
