President Obama has long said he had no intention of dictating specifics of any new plans to combat what he calls the problems of the American health care system. Of course, now he’s decided he’s going to get more involved in the specifics. Why? Well, apparently it’s because some of what President Obama wants in the new health care reforms are meeting some level of friction, specifically the idea of a comprehensive health care coverage for the 45 million Americans who are without health insurance.
Of course, the fact that somewhere in the neighborhood of 40% of those could have health insurance if they wanted it seems to get no play in the mainstream media.
Those 40%, some 18 million Americans, could afford health insurance but for whatever reason haven’t opted to pay for it. Honestly, it’s their right to pay or not pay for health coverage, but apparently in Washington it’s not OK. You see, many of these 40 percenters, as I like to call them, are self employed, small business owners, or just independently wealthy. This puts many of this group about the $250,000 a year mark that President Obama has flagged as “rich” and needing to be taxed more.
Of course, no matter how many times you lay out the results of a national health insurance plan to proponents of these things, results shown in countries around the world, they play ostrich and stick their heads in the sand. It’s just a shame that honest debate seems to be discouraged in this day and age.
Here’s the thing. Administration officials have already gone on the record singing the praises of rationed health care. They have gone on the record singing the praises of a single-payer system as well. And now the President is going to wade knee deep into the fray and try to ram home a health care plan that bears his stamp of approval on it, long before it ever is carried to the Oval Office.
What we’re looking at, boys and girls, is the complete destruction of our modern health care system. Those who work for small businesses had best get used to the idea of your health insurance going away, if not your jobs. The State will create a juggernaut of a health care coverage system that no private insurance company will be able to compete. Businesses that currently offer health care coverage will have less incentive to do so, since employees can get free coverage from Uncle Sam. Many of your health insurance companies will dry up and go away, sending millions of Americans out of work.
Of course, this is just one possible scenario. I’m sure President Obama and his aides will say that this is just alarmist rhetoric or something similar. However, there has yet to be a single coherent argument for national health insurance that seems to balance the free market with the President’s desire to force altruism down people’s throats. No plan that I’ve seen outlined will result in the desired effect, which is insuring those who don’t have insurance without providing disincentives to those employers already providing it.
But we must keep in mind that the President had insisted that he would leave details for health care reform up to Congress. Kind of like how he’s been insisting that he has no plans to run the day to day operations of General Motors. I guess it sucks to be GM right now, doesn’t it?
