Phoebe violates it’s own charter [ March 13, 2010 – 7:56 am] by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

The Albany Herald reports this morning of Margurete Burns, an 81 year old Albany woman, who suffered a head injury back in February. After being initially treated in Douglasville, Burns returned home. The next day, she got a phone call telling her to get medical treatment immediately. So, she went to Palmyra. The ER doctor apparently felt she needed a neurosurgeon, so he contacted Phoebe. They allegedly refused to take her, so she was airlifted to Macon.

Now, let’s ignore the fact that there are laws stating that hospitals can’t refuse to treat people, and go right to Phoebe’s own charter. Read More …

Postell Loses His Cool[ June 2, 2009 – 9:30 pm]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County

Tommy Postell has never really struck me as “cool under fire”.  Just reading the minutes of the City Commission can fill you with a sense that he definitely needs to lean over to Mayor Adams and as for a prescription for something to calm him down.  However, when the Albany Herald writes about it, well…we’re on to something good.

For those who may not know what I’m talking about, I’m referring to Commissioner Postell’s comments during the City Commission meeting after learning about the proposed rate hike at the County landfill.  Courtesy of the Albany Herald: Read More …

More Taxes Coming[ June 2, 2009 – 11:43 am]by Publius Posted in » National

Last week the Lee County Commissioners managed to pass a balanced budget without a tax increase, without laying-off a county employee and still give them a cost-of-living increase.

Now if only the Feds could do the same.

What Does GM’s Future Hold?[ June 2, 2009 – 11:30 am]by Tom Posted in » Editorial, National

So now that GM really does stand for Government Motors, we must ask what the future holds for General Motors and what hope it may have for regaining it’s greatness.  Now, in all fairness, the government does claim that there is no intent to maintain control any longer than is necessary.  But let’s say, just for argument’s sake, that they deem it’s “necessary” indefinitely.

To do that, let’s take a look at an entire industry that Uncle Sam nationalized, the passenger rail service.  Today, it’s better known as Amtrak. Read More …

San Joe’s A Sign For Downtown[ June 2, 2009 – 5:35 am]by Tom Posted in » Albany Dougherty County, Editorial

It’s kind of sad that a restaurant’s closing can generate the kind of news that San Joe’s has this week. From WALB to the Albany Herald, it’s a story that people seem interested in. It’s also a sign of what will continue to hurt downtown Albany. Read More …

It Ain’t Easy Being Green[ June 2, 2009 – 12:34 am]by Bill Waller Posted in » General

I was in Atlanta last week and heard a commercial for Hyundai. The commercial said that a customer could purchase a new automobile from now until June 30 and the company would actually send the customer a check back every month for the next six months. Plus if the customer loses his or her job within the next 12 months, the customer could return the car, keep the monthly payments, and not cause damage to his or her credit report.

That sounds like a pretty snazzy deal. It was followed by a tag line that went something like, “At Hyundai, we don’t mind spreading the wealth.”

I saw the exact same commercial in Albany an hour ago. The deal was the same, but the tag line was changed to something else that sounded a little less, ahhh, socialistic.
