Regulating Blogging

Apparently the Federal Trade Commission is pondering the idea of regulating bloggers.  Needless to say, this very concept is near and dear to the heart of SWGA Politics, and I’m a bit concerned with that this may entail.

At it’s heart, it looks basic enough.  They want to require bloggers who receive items or money to disclose such in their blogs since so many people these days look for product reviews and opinions from blogs (and we thank you by the way).  Since people do this, the FTC believes that they must step in and protect the consumer.  Gee thanks guys.  It’s just a shame folks are already doing it, ain’t it?

Maybe Cali Has Some Good Ideas After All?

Obviously, the big news out of California this week is that a proposed statewide tax increase was killed at the ballot box. Here’s hoping that they also make the spending cuts that need to happen as well. (Reason magazine coverage here and here.)

But I also found two articles out of Cali about a topic dear to my heart: education. You see, I am a former teacher and my wife currently teaches near our home in Lee County. I’ve said many times that No Child Left Behind and my experiences in the classroom under that law were a big driving force in me becoming a Libertarian, and I mean it.

So it was with great interest that I read this story out of Northern California about a small town where the students led a drive to recall the entire school board. [Continue Reading]

The Discrimination Card

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m personally sick of seeing the race card pulled.  It happens so much that I get sick to my stomach whenever it’s used.  I’ve seen it used when someone is fired for what was clear cause.  I’ve seen it used because someone just didn’t get their way.  And I’ve seen it used once when it was actually warranted.

Unfortunately, that one time that it was clearly discrimination was easy to dismiss because of other crying wolf. Continue reading The Discrimination Card
