Carlton Fletcher

Tom and I have been pretty hard on Carlton Fletcher earlier this week for comments he made in his column last Sunday – and then we actually met him.

Honestly, regardless of what he writes, he is a genuinely nice guy so far as I’ve personally been around him, and a great asset to the news community in the Albany area due to his dedication to his craft – something we were partially bashing in our posts due to our own preference for this format of reporting.

I said all that to basically say this: Carlton has two pieces in the Herald today, one as a reporter and one as a columnist. Both are really good, and nothing really needs to be said in addition to his column – I agree with him completely on it. (Though I do hold to my stance that government should be removed from education completely and that if this were done, the things he takes issue with in his column would no longer be a concern.)

I’ve already reached out to the Scott campaign for our own post with them, but expect a post based on Carlton’s report at some point later today.

This week, Carlton, great job!

Great Job Carlton! I think the story on Scott may be one of his best ever. I’m certainly going to pay more attention to Mr. Scott. I hope he is the real deal.
The article on the magnet schools blows my minds. How many elementary school students know what they want to be as an adult? Do we even want them focused on a career that early?
I agree with the Libertarians on this one–the government shouldn’t be involved in education.

First, I’ve got to give Carlton props for the Tesla mention. Nikola Tesla doesn’t get nearly enough shout outs these days ;)

The idea of magnet schools based on what an elementary kid wants to do is silly at best. I know I changed potential careers almost as often as I changed my underwear, and my mother was notorious for ensure I always had on clean tighty whiteys. There is no way a 1st grader can reasonably be expected to know what they want to do with their whole life. Wasting taxpayer money on such silly ideas is ridiculous.

  • Carlton is a fabulous human being and it was very, very decent of you to share the results of your positive encounter with him. I’m glad y’all have gotten to know each other. Keep up the good work. Kevin

Kevin Hogencamp’s last blog post..Here’s in what’s in this week’s paper!

Y’all suck up to media way too much.

  • Tom

Sure, because this and this are obvious examples of “sucking up”, right? ;)

We try to be fair. We’ll blast someone in an instant, but we also post when we think someone did right. Carlton Fletcher did right in those articles, particularly the one on Austin Scott. We can cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war anytime we choose, but at no point will we “suck up” to a soul.

    Dick,

Tom beat me to approving and responding to your comment, but like he said – we suck up to NO ONE, as evidenced by Tom’s attacks on Ken Hodges and my own on John Oxendine and other gubernatorial candidates – in addition to the posts critical of Carlton that Tom referenced. TRUST me, if we were going to suck up to someone and we chose Carlton Fletcher over Hodges or Oxendine, we’d pretty much be certifiably insane. Carlton’s a nice guy and all, but Hodges wants to be the next AG and Ox wants to be the next Governor – two positions that one would rather not have as his personal, or even political, enemies.
