Is Craigslist to blame for Craigslist Killer?

Yesterday, the online classified service Craigslist bowed to external pressure and ended its “erotic services” category after the alleged “Craigslist Killer” was apprehended recently. However, in all fairness to Craigslist, there will be an “Adult Services” category where ads will be individually screened by Craigslist staff. Frankly, it’s a shame.

The April 14 murder of Julia Brisman, a masseuse who advertised in the “erotic services” category on Craigslist by Phillip Markov is a horrible, horrible crime. I don’t think that anyone is saying otherwise. And I’ll admit that it’s Craigslist’s right to run it’s business as it sees fit, including changing categories in whatever manner it sees fit. But the state got involved in this one, and that’s what’s the real shame.

What did Craigslist do wrong? Simple. They did nothing wrong. The offer a service that was used for a nefarious purpose. Would it have been any different if it had been through the newspaper? What about through an email group? Would it matter? Continue reading Is Craigslist to blame for Craigslist Killer?

Why Do Liberals Hate The Poor?

When I was just a boy, I remember a cartoon on Sesame Street that featured a child wondering what possibilities could follow if he performed a certain action. It was a great exercise in considering the next step. That seems to be lacking in the world of modern liberalism, or is it?

Monsters and the Weak: A Response to Yesterday Morning’s “Small Town Soapbox”

I typically listen to KCountry 104.5 in the mornings on my way to work because they syndicate a morning show out of the northern suburbs of Atlanta from a man that I grew up listening to on Kicks 101.5, Moby in the Morning. I don’t remember him doing this ‘Small town Soapbox’ every morning when I was growing up, but it is a daily feature of his show now, and generally it is pretty good.

Yesterday morning’s, however, irked me a bit – which is something Moby admits is occasionally his intention.

A matter of priorities

I’ve been pretty critical of things like the City of Albany’s sign ordinance. I don’t apologize for that, and I won’t. Frankly, I think it’s stupid for the city to hamstring businesses fighting for limited dollars in this recession. However, I found that the City Commission has been good enough to post their priorities online, and at least the sign ordinance is in keeping with those.

Luckily, I’m going to repost these for your viewing pleasure. Continue reading A matter of priorities

Setting the Record Straight on State Senator David Shafer

I have been a harsh critic of Senator David Shafer for several of the votes he cast during the last session of the General Assembly. He recently reached out to me, and after talking with him and doing some independent research of my own, I believe that some of my criticism of him was unfair, and in the interest of fairness, I would like to set the record straight.
