Tom’s Comments to Carlton Fletcher

Earlier today, Jeff made his response to Carlton Fletcher’s article where we sort of get “called out”.  I made comments on that thread, but really, I found I had much, much more to say.  In his article, Mr. Fletcher says:

I have nothing against computer folks and TV news people – Jeff Sexton does a good job with his SWGA Politics blog and Len Kiese and Ashley Knight are actually quite good TV reporters – but if part of your job description is ‘getting your makeup right,’ I’m not going to bank on the depth of your ‘reporting’.

Obviously, Mr. Fletcher has a right to his opinion, and at the risk of starting a blog/newspaper war, I’m going to throw my own comments into the mix. Continue reading Tom’s Comments to Carlton Fletcher

John Oxendine Campaign Contribution Scandal: A Timeline

I’ve already commented here on the story that broke yesterday about the potentially illegal campaign contributions received by John Oxendine.

But let’s look at the complete timeline:

Weds-Fri last week: AJC begins working on an article about potentially illegal campaign contributions recieved by John Oxendine and contacts the Oxendine campaign seeking comments/clarification. Oxendine tells the AJC on Weds “It’s not like an oversight or I didn’t know what the law was,” he said. “We received it from completely different sources, and they are not common.”

Friday: Oxendine releases an email telling supporters to expect “Lies, rumors, and more lies”.

Saturday: Peach Pundit gets wind of an AJC article forthcoming re: Oxendine

Sunday: AJC article comes out and is a major front page story with the headline “Oxendine’s big funder”

Ox ‘responds’ to AJC article: “Yes, these intrepid, profit generating, cracker jack ‘reporters’ have attacked John Oxendine with a front page ‘story’ which they consider to be serious investigative reporting.”

Monday: Ox actually adresses the report: “I decided to return the funds”

So first Oxendine warns of ‘lies’ to be forthcoming – knowing that the AJC is working on an article about illegal campaign funds he received. Then, when the AJC article comes out, he denies NOTHING about it, but instead attacks the AJC for its perceived (and, to my view, accurately perceived) bias and even takes a swipe at Karen Handle – this despite Friday’s email stating that he would run a ‘positive’ campaign ‘on the issues’. Finally, Monday he says that he is returning the money – pretty much admitting every detail of the AJC story, but trying to save face regardless.

Hmm… seems that John Oxendine doesn’t think the honesty and integrity of a person seeking office is an ‘issue’. I beg to differ on that, and I think the majority of Georgians will agree with me.

For full disclosure, the full text of all three emails from Ox is below the fold.

The Stand in Montana

If you’re a lover of freedom and liberty, chances are you’ve heard of what’s going on in Montana.  In case you haven’t, here’s a recap.  Montana has passed a law basically saying that guns produced within Montana for residents of Montana are exempt from federal background checks, dealer licensing rules, and manufacturers rules.  Obviously, this has a lot of layers to it. More Government?

The question of more versus less government is timeless it seems. The one thing that Republicans seem to share with Libertarians is espousing a belief that we need less government in the lives of every day Americans. This is apparently a sentiment not agreed to by former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Colin Powell.

Gay Marriage: A Compromise

Few subjects stir the soul here in the South like the idea of gay marriage. Arguments from both sides come across with passion and fire like an old time sermon. And, frankly, neither side wants to budge. I understand that, but my position is a little different from Jeff’s. Jeff asks simply “what business does the government have in marriage anyways?” Continue reading Gay Marriage: A Compromise
